Congratulations to Charlie Hopta, North Hunterdon music teacher, who has been named a finalist for the Master Music Teacher award from the New Jersey Music Educators Association (NJMEA). Just being named a finalist is a remarkable honor, and we are incredibly proud of Mr. Hopta’s accomplishments.
Mr. Hopta has just completed his 14th year with North’s renowned music programs, where his leadership, with the help of his wonderful colleagues, has shaped countless students’ passion for music. He directs and co-directs numerous ensembles, including the ‘Golden Lions’ marching band, concert band, concert choir, and chamber choir. He also teaches both instrumental and vocal lessons. Under his guidance, the North Hunterdon Music Department has consistently enjoyed successful performances, competitions, field trips, and community outreach events. In addition to his teaching, Mr. Hopta has been the Pit Orchestra conductor for the North Hunterdon Theater Organization’s Winter Musicals since 2022.
Ensembles under his direction have earned significant accolades, most recently including: 2nd overall high school parade band at the 2024 NYC Columbus Day Parade; Top overall placements at the May 16 2025 Music In The Parks adjudication. Over the years, many North students have auditioned successfully for NJMEA Regional, All-State, and NAFME All-Eastern Honors performing ensembles, showcasing his strong impact on their musical development.
Holding a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education and Performance from Lebanon Valley College (2008) and a Master’s in Music Education with a concentration in Music Technology from West Chester University (2019), Mr. Hopta’s extensive academic background compliments his practical contributions to music education. He has also written and implemented a new Honors weighted music curriculum.
Mr. Hopta is a member of the NJMEA and the National Association for Music Education. Beyond his work at North Hunterdon, he also performs locally and enjoys his family life. His commitment to both music education and his students has left a lasting legacy on the North Hunterdon community.
The NJMEA will review his candidacy this Fall 2025 and announce the final decision at that time. Congratulations to Mr. Hopta for this achievement!
