Outlook: Coach John Simpson is counting on several key returnees from last year to help his team’s offense this season. The Lions will need to find a way to replace some defensive talent they lost from last year. Simpson is in his 12th season.
From coach Simpson: “We were young last year and have several returning varsity players. I think we could be a dangerous offensive team. We have skill and speed.”

“It feels good. I think we’ll be pretty good this year,” McDonald said of becoming the starter. “Our whole idea is to compete and come with a hard hat mentality. It’s been a lot of hard work in the weight room and on the practice field, a lot of competitions.”
THIRD STAR: Amanda Ferrante, Jr., North Hunterdon
Ferrante picked up a crucial set victory to help North Hunterdon improve to 4-0. She jumped on Paige Paladini of Bernards early with a 6-2 victory, but Paladini rebounded to take the second set, 1-6. Ferrante quickly bounced back to take the third set 6-2.

2013 record: 4-12 overall, 2-10 Skyland Conference Delaware Division
Players to watch: Sr. GK Kelli Lieberman, Sr. F Brynn McDonald, Sr. D Ashley Bucher, Sr. MF Courtney Bucher, Jr. F Heather Tostevin, So. GK Olivia Ripnyak.
Outlook: As a new coach last fall, Matt Maurella got his initiation in the Skyland Conference’s Delaware Division, which usually features at least five of the top 20 teams in the state. Maurella chalks 2013 up to a learning experience for both himself and his players. The Lions have 12 seniors returning and their biggest need will be, as it usually has been, scoring goals.
From coach Maurella: “There’s a new team dynamic of sorts since a lot of the girls now on varsity were on JV last year. We’ve pulled them up as a group and they seem to be meshing better. We want to spread the field, work the passing game and control the ball more as a team instead of just kick and run.”

McDevitt and Trinity, who played second doubles last year, will move up to No. 1 doubles. Adamako, who played No. 2 singles last year, will team with newcomer Gutescu at second doubles.
