North Hunterdon 2, J.P. Stevens 1: Junior shortstop Carly Severini delivered a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning Tuesday to lift the top-seeded North Hunterdon High School softball team to a 2-1 victory over fifth-seeded J.P. Stevens in the semifinals of the NJSIAA North 2 Group IV Softball Tournament.
Taylor Knoble got the seventh inning going with a one-out single and went to second on a wild pitch. After an out, Megan Graham walked, bringing up Severini, who singled to left field on a 2-2 pitch to send the Lady Lions to the final and set up a rematch of last year’s championship game, 4 p.m. Friday against second-seeded and defending champ Watchung Hills.
J.P. Stevens got on the board first, as two walks and a hit batsman loaded the bases with one, before Amanda Lombardi drove in Gabriella Young on a groundout. North Hunterdon tied it in the bottom of the fourth on a one-out solo homer by Kayla Parker.
Mason Spichiger earned the victory, allowing just a run on two hits, walking three and striking out 11. Kayla Smith was the hard-luck loser with 6 2/3 strong, allowing just two runs on eight hits and two walks.
