As we begin the 2012-2013 school year, we would like to share some of the updates that the Technology Department prepared for this new school year:
In terms of Infrastructure:
- We provisioned a new 50Mbps Internet connection.
- As usual, we have updated (or will be updating in the beginning of the school year) some computer labs. This year the turn was for the Art labs at both schools, and the R/W lab at VHS.
In terms of Web 2.0 Services:
- We updated Moodle from 1.0 to 2.3. Although teachers and students can continue to use 1.9 this year. As teachers become more used to 2.3, they will do the switch.
- We now have an Edmodo subdomain (nhv.edmodo.com). Edmodo is an online platform for class collaboration. Teacher posts assignments and establish class discussions online via Edmodo groups. Parents/Guardians are giving a “parent code” that allow parents/guardians to view the work done by their student online in Edmodo.
- We will be rolling out Google Apps for Education this year. First it will be available for Teachers. When teachers become more familiar with Google Apps, we will be rolling it for students. Google Apps is a set of online tools complimentary provided by Google to educational institutions. Students and Teachers can use Google Apps to work on and share documents online. Google Apps for education also provides cloud storage for teachers and student files.
- We will be piloting an online evaluation tool for teachers, OASYS.
Other initiatives:
- We are running a 1:1 pilot program at both schools. One class at NHHS and one class at VHS will participate. Classes where selected based on the availability of the teachers and the resources for the pilot.
