BIO:
Welcome to the Family and Consumer Sciences Suite! My name is Kelsey Collins and I am your child’s FSC teacher. This is my eighth year with Voorhees High School teaching Culinary Fundamentals, International Foods and Interior Design. I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Family and Consumer Sciences Education at Marywood University in Scranton, Pa. I also have my Master’s Degree in Education with a concentration in Nutrition Education at Framingham State University. I coach the girl’s junior varsity volleyball team as well at Voorhees.
In the Family and Consumer Sciences Department at Voorhees, we feel strongly that one of the best ways to learn is by doing, so we implement many “hands-on” activities that apply skills learned in class. We also feel the need to promote a stronger sense of family and community involvement among the students and encourage them to share new skills, terms and techniques learned in class with you and others at home. We believe that our Family and Consumer Sciences courses teach valuable skills that can be used every day for the rest of their life, no matter what direction they follow after high school.
My goal is that students will want to do more cooking at home, share recipes done in class and try new ones. Therefore I would like to share with you what we prepare and cover in class so that you may encourage your child to apply what they have learned and share the results of such experiences with your family. I will be posting recipes and pictures of our class recipes and results on my website: http://www.nhvweb.net/vhs/practicalarts/kcollins/ Likewise, if you have any special family recipes or expertise in a specific area to share with us, I’d love to hear from you!
Also, if at any time throughout the semester you have any thoughts or concerns, or just want to know how your child is doing in class, please feel free to call me at (908)638-2199 (ext. 2028) or email me at kcollins@nhvweb.net. Thank you for your support and cooperation in teaching our young adults skills for life!
