For guiding the Lions to a school-record 11 victories and their first sectional title since 1975, Mazzetta is the 2017 lehighvalleylive Football Coach of the Year.
He is the second North Hunterdon coach to win the honor, formerly The Express-Times Coach of the Year. Fritz Halfacre was given the award after the Lions’ 1974 season.
Mazzetta, a former player at Hunterdon Central and then Virginia Tech, had reason to be optimistic about North Hunterdon’s prospects entering the fall. The Lions were coming off a four-loss campaign, which contained a handful of second-half stumbles.
Mazzetta credits his assistants – Kevin Kley (D-coordinator), Anthony Petraglia (D-line, special teams), Bob Lockhart (LBs, H-backs), John McSweeney (O-line) and Billy Krebs (WRs) – for building up that conviction within the players.
