Mind of the Athlete Fall Sports Communication talk today by Dr. Jarrod Spencer

Some points of emphasis from the Mind of the Athlete Communication at the Lions Athletic Leadership Academy discussion today:

  1. Put away your cell phone when someone is talking to you.
  2. Toughness is being able to talk about your feelings and not just suppress them.
  3. Use more “I feel ” than, “I Think” statements to express your self – people can argue with your thoughts but not your feelings.
  4. Increase your positive self-talk.
  5. Teams that “High Five” more are more likely to play better, are more cooperative and win more games.
  6. Speak the hard truth to each other, but do so in a loving way.
  7. Encouragement enhances performance. Encourage your teammates.
  8. Talk about your stressors with people who can help you.
  9. People tend to remember how you made them feel more than what you said.
  10. Face to face verbal skills are important, especially for conflict resolution.
