The Lions were anchored by a nail-biting first-place finish by Ryan Pomrinca at 126 pounds, a pair of runner-up finishes by Mike Ciavarro (152) and Joe Guzzo (170) and a redeeming third-place finish by Mike Sicola (160) to advance to the state tournament in Atlantic City.
Pomrinca’s 3-2 ultimate tiebreaker decision over returning state champion Craig De la Cruz of Bound Brook earned him the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler Award. He and De la Cruz battled tough from start to finish with the crowd on the edge of their seats anticipating every move until the Lion junior got the escape to get the win.
