National Honor Society

Advisor: Steve Delorenzo sdelorenzo@nhvweb.net

The National Honor Society (NHS) was created to recognize and foster academic achievement while developing other characteristics essential to being productive citizens within our school and community. The cornerstone of National Honor Society projects and activities is that each member has an obligation to use his or her talents, skills, and knowledge for the betterment of others. Our local chapter provides the framework in which eligible selected high school students render special service to the community. Working together as a group, the chapter multiplies the benefits of its service. The society also enables every individual to work in a unique way for the enhancement of the community. The NHS serves as an excellent training ground for the youth who will be the future leaders in society. NHS members are expected to maintain and extend the qualities that won them selection but also understand that membership is both an honor and an obligation.

Criteria for Membership in the National Honor Society

  1. Students who are academically eligible (cumulative 92% GPA or higher at the end of sophomore year) will be invited via letter to apply in the Spring of their Junior year.
  2. Students must also demonstrate excellence in three additional areas to be considered for acceptance:
    • Minimum 100 hours of extracurricular activities.
    • Minimum 100 hours of community service.
    • Minimum 50 hours of leadership activities.
    • These hours must be completed from the start of their freshman year until they apply in the spring of junior year. Hours completed prior to high school will not be counted and should not be submitted
  3. If invited to apply due to academic eligibility, an application will be provided at a to be determined interest meeting.
  4. Students have a second opportunity to be invited during the fall of their senior year, provided that their cumulative GPA is 92% or higher at the end of their Junior year.

SNHS is a prominent scientific organization that will engender a new group of young thinkers who will be the future of industry, research, and scientific exploration for America.

Membership in this organization is by invitation only, and selection criteria is based on both the level and grade that a student has earned in their first 3 years of science courses.  In addition, the student must be enrolled in a full year science course as a senior.  Once inducted, the students will complete a wide variety of volunteer activities in order to earn service hours.

Are you eligible for Science National Honor Society?  You must……

  • Be enrolled in a FULL year science course your senior year.  This includes the  Biomedical Academy, but does not include Computer Science.  *Organic Chemistry is the ONLY half year course we will allow you to use to fill this requirement.

  • Have completed 3 FULL year science courses in which your grade for an Honors level class was a 90 or above and your grade for an AP level class was an 83 or above.

If you meet all of these criteria, then you will receive an invite to join from Mrs. Post or Mrs. Plaxe sometime in April of your junior year.

  • La Société Honoraire de Français is a national honor society sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French to recognize the achievements of outstanding French students. The North Hunterdon High School French Honor Society, Section De Tocqueville, was founded in 1972, becoming the first language honor society at NHHS. Induction requirements: a student must have received a grade of “A” for two years in French, and a “B” average in all other subjects and meet other national requirements. The club meets bi-weekly on Thursdays at 2:30 PM or as announced for special activities. Inductions are held in the fall and spring for students who have become eligible for membership. The French Honor Society’s motto: “La personne qui sait deux langues en vaut deux”; means “the person who knows two languages is worth two.”
