How to analyze a case study
Case studies offer descriptions of geographic situations, from which you must:
Firstly
- Identify the key problem/issue
- Weigh the situation-culturally, economically, politically……
- Define the Concepts/vocab helpful to opening the case study
- Generate ideas solutions & alternative solutions
How to approach the case study
Step 1 View the material carefully and ask yourself 3 important questions:
- What are the main 3 main concepts?
- How are these concepts related to vocab?
- What evidence is there that the case connects with the concepts?
Once you have done this what are THE ESSENTIAL QUESTION which outlines the key issues.(place in the EQ box)
Step 2 Evaluate the situation/CASE clearly and ask yourself the following questions:
- What is the spatial background to the case?
- What research (text/vocab) could I use to understand the issues?
- What landscapes are suggested/supported by research (text/vocab)?
Step 3 Use SPECIAL PAPER provided to write your analysis.
An effective case study report should
- Clearly identify the core concepts
- Evaluate the case issues underlying the problem
- Discuss and justify your analysis using VOCAB
The format
ESSENTIAL QUESTION
This question gives an overview of the situation and identifies the key issues underlying the problems in the case (EQ box)
Paragraphs
Present and analyze 3 CONCEPTS -underline VOCAB -3 concepts developed in lined section on the front of special paper. Consider and assess concepts with VOCAB terms (underlined in lined area). Draw from both Text readings and research
Level of LITERACY/WRITING/VOCAB competency will be determined by following evidence:
- Cite specific CASE evidence to support analysis of concepts with vocab connecting insights gained from specific details within the case.
- Evaluate various explanations for actions or events which determine the best evidence that connects to a geographic concept
- Define the meaning of vocab as they are used in a text, including analyzing and defining the meaning of a key term.
- Evaluate differing points of view on the same event or issue by assessing evidence
- Integrate multiple sources of information presented in diverse formats in order to solve the case problem in a coherent format.
MAPS, charts, graphs and diagrams- must be included with the report & added to the vocab/map/model column. All illustrations must be clearly labelled and referred to in the analysis.
Pitfalls of case study analysis to guard against
Students lose points when their analysis fails to:
- Identify the concept which describes the case study situation
- Address the specific geographic concepts
- Support ideas with evidence from research/vocab {underline Key words.}
Special paper self check
- Essential Question: This consists of one or two sentences to describe the context of the case and summarizes the entire analysis.
- Case presentation: Several strong effective sentences that describes the geographic examinations of the case. First sentence in the paragraph is your thesis.
- Synthesize by demonstrating how the geographic conditions developed & are applied to life lessons for college and careers.
