Girls Volleyball: Previewing the Group 4 semifinals, 2017- Nov. 8

Posted: | Entry Type: Post

2-Cherokee (27-0) vs. 3-North Hunterdon (19-6)

This is a rematch of last year’s Group 4 second round, a match that North Hunterdon won 25-13, 25-17.

Cherokee has had a dream season to date but this will be, arguably, its toughest match yet.

The second-seeded Chiefs have taken down Montclair, Old Bridge and Clifton to reach the semifinals. On the season, this Cherokee squad has only lost six sets.

Kayleigh Kitchen has been a star in her senior campaign. She leads the team and has set a career high with 241 kills. Makenzie Jackson and Madison Patton have each been solid hitters with a combined 169 kills.

Alexis Bickett and Alaina Santacroce have proven to be a strong pair of setters with 285 and 209 assists respectively. The offense doesn’t stop there, though. Erica Marchlowitz has 64 aces on the season, Santacroce has 49 and Marlana Stipa rounds out the top three with 45.

North Hunterdon finds itself in the semifinals once again this year. Last fall, a promising tournament run was ended by Hunterdon Central in a 14-25, 16-25 loss. The Lions were able to rectify that loss by knocking out Hunterdon Central in this year’s quarterfinals, 25-20, 21-25, 25-18.

The team opened the tournament with a big 25-9, 25-15 win over Edison and followed that with a 25-23, 25-15 win over Randolph.

Instead of having just one dynamic hitter, the Lions have three in Caroline Layding, Emma Mikitiuk and Eleanor Stothoff. All three have combined for 354 kills and Layding leads the group with 121.

Jill Ferreira and Julia Pereira are the team’s go-to setting duo and add another wrinkle to an already potent offense. Ferreira leads North Hunterdon with 281 assists and Pereira has 177. Sarah Khan has chipped in nicely offensively with 30 aces, second on the team to Layding’s 31.

Khan has been sensational on the other side of the ball with 353 digs. Layding and Stothoff both make their presence felt on defense as well. Stothoff’s 69 blocks lead the team and Layding has 46 of her own.

Girls Cross Country: North Hunterdon secures three-peat at NJSIAA Sectionals

Posted: | Entry Type: Post

North Hunterdon, the two-time defending N2G4 sectional champion heading into Saturday, made it a three-peat with another dominating performance, tallying 28 points on a 1-2-3-7-15 finish with Elena DiMarcello (18:19), Chloe Gonzalez (18:27) and Emily Nugent (18:31) occupying the top three spots. Angela Kearsley finished seventh in 19:08, Samantha Kehler ran in 19:28 for 15th place, Alexandra Carlson finished 20th place in 19:51 and Brenna Talamo finished in 26th place in 20.10.

While the Lions will celebrate another sectional title, a state championship and an MoC title, something that has been won by sectional rival Ridge the last two years, is still the main goal.

“It means a lot to us. Our team has been working really hard so we’re really excited going into the next meet,” DiMarcello said. “I’m really proud of everyone on the team. Everyone is having a good year and we’re a really deep team.”

“I think it helps us a lot, the last two years we’ve lost at groups and MoCs so I think it gives us more confidence to try and win it this year.”

Hunterdon County football teams will be scoreboard watching this weekend

Posted: October 31, 2017 | Entry Type: Post

While Hunterdon Central, North Hunterdonand Voorhees will all be playing for something this weekend, although playoff position is not one of them since all three have played their allotted eight games, all will be scoreboard watching to decide their playoff fate.

North Hunterdon and Voorhees are not only playoff locks, but they will host a first-round game and possibly two. Before they start watching the scoreboard, however, they will do battle against each other in the 42nd annual MilkCan Game at Voorhees on Friday night. Both teams are 7-1.

The playoffs begin on the weekend of Nov. 10-11. Teams are seeded based on power points after their eighth game, with their best seven games making up the final point total. The majority of teams in the state have played eight games, but several have not which pretty much makes every bracket still unresolved.

Newton (1) at North Hunterdon (1), Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Tournament, Final Round – Girls Soccer

Posted: October 28, 2017 | Entry Type: Post

The third-seeded Lions were able to score in the second half to force overtime and eventually won a penalty kick shootout over ninth-seeded Newton after the teams had played to a 1-1 tie in the championship game of the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Tournament at Warren Hills High School.

Becca Fontana broke free and tucked away a one-on-one goal five minutes into the second half to force overtime. After two scoreless overtime periods, the game went to the shootout, which North Hunterdon won, 3-2.

Goalkeeper Alex Macce, named the tournament MVP, blocked Newton’s first, fourth and fifth attempts in the shootout, after allowing only one goal in regulation to a Newton team that had scored 16 goals through the first four rounds of the tournament.

“We’ve been tested all year,” North Hunterdon coach Steve DeLorenzo said. “These girls just amaze me every day.”

Emily Johnson, Alison Cafaro and Fontana scored on the first three shootout attempts for Hunterdon North, which was all the advantage that Macce needed to put it away and secure the Lions’ first title since 2008.
