Mind of the Athlete Fall Sports Communication talk today by Dr. Jarrod Spencer
Some points of emphasis from the Mind of the Athlete Communication at the Lions Athletic Leadership Academy discussion today:
- Put away your cell phone when someone is talking to you.
- Toughness is being able to talk about your feelings and not just suppress them.
- Use more “I feel ” than, “I Think” statements to express your self – people can argue with your thoughts but not your feelings.
- Increase your positive self-talk.
- Teams that “High Five” more are more likely to play better, are more cooperative and win more games.
- Speak the hard truth to each other, but do so in a loving way.
- Encouragement enhances performance. Encourage your teammates.
- Talk about your stressors with people who can help you.
- People tend to remember how you made them feel more than what you said.
- Face to face verbal skills are important, especially for conflict resolution.

North Hunterdon’s Walsh is the 2017 lehighvalleylive Track and Field Coach of the Year
Sean Walsh likes to talk about his team.
“It is all about the girls,” said North Hunterdon’s 13-year girls track and field coach. “Our success isn’t a tribute to our coaching staff, it’s a tribute to the girls. I don’t think any of the success we have had happens if the girls don’t care about creating success, and when they care about each other, that is what makes it fun, no matter what the results are.”
Walsh is considerably less excited to talk about himself, so here are two of his runners to help explain why he is the 2017 lehighvalleylive Track and Field Coach of the Year.

North Hunterdon’s Rotondo is 2017 lehighvalleylive Softball Coach of the Year
North Hunterdon softball seniors Meghan Graham, Melissa Meiners, Karli House, Claudia Maira and Allison Lenert meant a lot to Lions coach Anthony Rotondo.
“One of the things that made this year so special was our five seniors. This was my fourth year at North Hunterdon. These were the five kids who were freshmen when I started. They’re the first kids that were with me all four years,” Rotondo said. “I kind of drove that point home way back in March to all of our kids. We really want to send these kids out in a special way. They’re very special to me because they started with me and they’re the first group that will ever say they played all four years for me. That meant a lot to me and they took it and they ran with it.”

Softball: Skyland Conference Player of the Year and other postseason honors, 2017
TEAM OF THE YEAR: A loss to Pope John in the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Tournament just as North Hunterdon seamed to be hitting its stride could have derailed the Lions’s season. Instead, the Hunterdon County squad rebounded and made sure the season was one of the best in school history. With X leading the way, North Hunterdon went 24-5 on the year, which included a North Jersey, Section 2, Group 4 title win over Bridgewater-Raritan and then knocking off Morris Knolls in the Group 4 semifinals. Egg Harbor held off North Hunterdon, 2-1, in the Group 4 final, but the Lions nonetheless proved they were the best team in the highly competitive Skyland Conference.
