* All current events are due every other __Thursday___ starting _Thursday, February 2, 2016__.  A current event is considered “on-time” if a hard copy is turned in prior to 3:10 or an email is sent / current event is shared prior to 12:00 am on the day selected.  Should you not meet this requirement; your current event will not be accepted. Should you be absent on the due date, the above will pertain to the day you return.*

Correct procedures for current events:

1.  ALL CURRENT EVENTS MUST BE TYPED.  Failing to do so will cost you 15 points.

2.  FOLLOW THE FORMAT.  As shown on the next page.

3.  ATTACH THE ARTICLE.  Failing to do so will cost you 15 points. If you use a newspaper, cut out the news article neatly (scissors needed) to fit the size of a normal sheet of paper. Find a way to make it fit because I don’t want to deal with sloppy articles.  Finding articles online may be even easier. Try looking on cnn.com, yahoo news, msnbc.com and other news sites.  If you send the assignment electronically, include the link to the article in the email itself or in the document.

4.  Should you chose to email these, save your work as a word document and attach it to the email. Copy the URL address of the article and paste it into the body of the email.

5.  Keep it to a page – single space.

6.  The source of your article must be up to one week current.  Don’t use editorials or an extremely short synopsis.

7.  Be creative, be thorough.  Proofread and watch your language.

8.  You can miss 1 current event per marking period without penalty.  After that, you know how much it will cost you.

9.  If you hand in ALL of them, I’ll give you a free 25 points of extra credit.

10.  Remember this is a class dealing with the CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM so your current events should deal with this topic.

11.   My advice to you would be to find a trial or case you may be able to follow throughout the semester. This may not always be applicable.

12.  If you aren’t willing to or will not complete current events, you’re going to do poorly in this class.

What your current events should look like:

Title of Article                                                                                                                                       Name

Source of Article                                                                                                                                   Mods

Date of Article                                                                                                                                       Due Date

Summary (actually write this)

This is where your 1 paragraph summary is to be written.  It should be at least 7-10 sentences in length.  Please attempt to write the majority of this in your own words.  If you are quoting passages from the article, please be sure to use a citation.

Opinion (this one too)

This is where you are to write your opinion paragraph.  It should be at least 7-10 sentences in length.  In your opinion, you should include any combination of the following:

  • reason(s) why you selected this given article
  • how it relates to the class
  • possible relation to a previous current event assignment
  • your reaction to any aspect of the article
  • any other feelings you have concerning the topic

Without our individual opinions, we would all be alike and thus incredibly boring.  Therefore, try not to repeat yourself and don’t give me the “I really don’t have any opinion but this is the only article I could find” bit.

Things to remember:

** 1 page only, so single space.

** This is not a letter to your friend.  Proofread and watch your language.

*** Attach the article (cut out neatly if necessary) to the back of your writing if your handing in a hard copy.  If you’re emailing them, just put the link to the article in the body of the email.
