Difference of Opinion

Students, community members, and faculty and staff do not always agree on the severity of different cheating behaviors.

Examples are:

Only 51% of students believe that getting questions and/or answers from someone who has taken a test should be considered moderate or serious cheating compared to 90% of parents and 95% of faculty/staff.

Community members, 96% of whom identified as having had or have a student at North, also appear to be unaware of the amount of cheating that occurs at the high school.

Only 3% of parents believe that their children have helped someone else cheat on a test once or more than once compared to 49% of students who have admitted to helping someone cheat.

“If cheating behavior is seen as normal, there is no violation of ethics and thus no need for neutralization” (Rettinger & Kramer, 2009).
