National Hazing Prevention Week – Be Safe

Posted: | Entry Type: Post
NHPWNFHS1Dear Parents/Guardians and All Students,
This week is National Hazing Prevention Week. As you have seen in media reports across the country, incidents of hazing as well as harassment, intimidation and bullying (HIB), may take place at schools. The administrators at North Hunterdon and Voorhees High Schools would like to inform you of the protocols that we have in place to help prevent these types of behaviors:
  • All staff members are trained annually on HIB.
  • Coaches take a hazing course.
  • Coaches have reviewed locker room protocols with their student-athletes.
  • Coaches have reviewed their behavior expectations with their student-athletes.
  • Coaches have met with the Athletic Administration to review these protocols and expectations.
  • Coaches, Security Staff and Administration perform security walk-throughs of the locker rooms during the day.
  • The high school district hires current employees as coaches when possible.
  • Parents/guardians and student-athletes are asked to sign off on their athletic paperwork acknowledging that they have reviewed the District’s hazing, sportsmanship and athletic policies.
  • Dr. Jarrod Spencer presents his Mind of the Athlete program to our student-athletes three times each year.  The athletic directors have asked him to include pertinent issues related to hazing, intimidation, and bullying in his presentations.
  • Class meetings are held with all students about hazing and HIB.
  • Periodic emails are sent out.
  • Physical Education/Health teachers include discussions about these issues in their Character Education Program.
  • School-wide assemblies are held on these subjects. School clubs such as the Friends of Rachel and the Green Dot Club focus on improving school climate and reducing bullying in the schools.
  • HIB Information can be found on the District and both high school websites.
  • North Hunterdon and Voorhees High School will be kicking off soon the North360/Voorhees 360 cellphone/chromebook software curriculum that will includes hazing awareness.

The Administration asks that you remind your son or daughter about the behavioral expectations that the schools have for them on a daily basis while they are attending our high schools. Additionally, please review the schools’ Code of Conduct with them.

Additionally, please review the National Hazing Prevention Week information.

We have outstanding staff, coaches, parents/guardians and student-athletes at both schools, and we greatly appreciate your assistance in helping to spread this message.

North Hunterdon baseball team downs Pope John to win HWS County Title

Posted: May 19, 2015 | Entry Type: Post

NHHS-Baseball-HWS-2015-ChampsCongratulations to the baseball team for winning the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex County Championship over Pope John 3-0. It is North’s first county championship in the Tri-county era and its first overall since it won the Hunterdon/Warren Tournament in 1999.

John Wilson, who earned tournament MVP honors, faced just 27 batters, allowing three hits and walking three with seven strikeouts to improve to 7-0 on the year. Wilson allowed one run in North Hunterdon’s first round win over High Point, followed by shutouts over Newton in the quarterfinals, Hunterdon Central in the semifinals and now Pope John in the title game.

Catcher Andrew Meiners got North (21-7) on the board in the top of the first inning with a two-run home run that just cleared the right field wall. The lead then grew to 3-0 in the third on an RBI single by Jeff Gernon. That was more than enough for Wilson, who navigated his only true jam in the bottom half of the frame.

Austin Arndt makes most of rare start and handles Phillipsburg in sectional baseball opener

AustinArndtCongratulations to the Lions baseball team as they defeated Phillipsburg HS 8-1 in the First Round of the North 2 Group 4 State Baseball Tournament. Austin Arndt pitched a gem not allowing a baserunner for the first four innings and wound up striking out nine Stateliners in five innings of three-hit, no-walk baseball to earn the win. North Hunterdon (20-7), the third seed, backed up Arndt with marvelously productive clutch hitting. The Lions, who will host sixth-seeded Ridge HS in the quarterfinals Thursday at North, scored four runs with two outs, including catcher Andrew Meiners’ two-run home run to straightaway center field in the sixth inning that slammed the door on the Stateliners. John Wilson and Tim Heard both had two-run doubles.
