All students must wear approved eye goggles when involved in a laboratory activity in which caustic, hot, or reactive chemicals are used or in an activity where physical injury to the eyes may occur.

Students who wear contact lenses must remove these prior to all laboratory activities when chemicals are used and wear prescription eyeglasses and goggles.

Students are not to wear sandals or open – toe shoes during laboratory activities involving caustic chemicals, glassware, or dissecting materials.

Food or beverages are not permitted in the laboratory.

Students are expected to maintain quiet behavior during laboratory activities.

Students are expected to know the location of all safety equipment in the laboratory/classroom and the location of the nearest fire alarm.

Students should not carry hot equipment or dangerous chemicals through congestion of students.

Students should report all injuries to the teacher immediately regardless of how minor.

Students should never attempt unauthorized experiments. No laboratory work should be carried on without the teacher’s permission.

Always douse with lots of water, any area which has contacted acid or a caustic material. If the eye is involved, irrigate in the eyewash for 15 minutes without interruption.

Students should not work with cracked glassware.

Sink drains should be thoroughly flushed with water after spilling out reagents.

When disposing of chemicals follow the direction of the teacher.

Never return unused solutions of chemicals to stock containers or reagent bottles.

When removing an electric plug from its socket, you should pull the plug and not the cord. Report frayed cords to the teacher.

If you feel faint or nauseous, begin to cough excessively, or your eyes begin to water, inform your teacher. You may be having a reaction to some of the chemicals being used in the laboratory.

During dissections, students must use the razor or scalpel safely and correctly. No student should mutilate or harm others or dissecting materials.
