WASHINGTON — The pitcher’s duel, which featured dual no-hitters through three innings, lived up to the billing, but it was the Lions that provided Wilson some support to come away with the 5-0 win in the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex semifinals at Joseph Steinhardt Memorial Field.
John Wilson fired a two-hit shutout in the win, striking out 12 with a strong mix of fastball and curveball command to keep the Blue Streaks guessing all day.
A Warren Hills error gave the Lions 2-0 lead. Jeff Guile’s RBI double to the gap in the sixth inning drove home Jack Peterson and forced Veneziano out of the game. By the time the inning ended, North Hunterdon held a 5-0 lead, which was more than enough for Wilson.
North Hunterdon advanced to its third straight county finals, and has a shot to defend its title, next Saturday at Phillipsburg against the winner of Monday’s other semifinal between Newton and Hackettstown.
