North Hunterdon edges rival to win H/W/S golf tournament

Posted: | Entry Type: Post

North Hunterdon has prevailed over their chief rival on the links this season.

Led by a 3-over-par 74 from sophomore Eric Stevens, the Lions posted a four-player score of 314 Tuesday to edge Hunterdon Central (318) by four strokes to win the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Golf Tournament at the Architects Golf Club.

Other contributors for North Hunterdon were juniors Brian Cardace (78) and Brendan Zappala (83), and freshman Mike Kochanowski (79).

The Lions’ victory breaks a four-year winning streak by the Red Devils in the H/W/S tournament. Hunterdon Central had won eight Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex titles in a nine-year period (with the Lions winning in 2012).

North Hunterdon, which won the Skyland Conference Raritan Division title with a 16-3 record, defeated Hunterdon Central 155-163 earlier in the season, but the Red Devils won the rematch 156-159.

North Hunterdon’s Skyland Conference tournament team title in early May, however, coupled with Tuesday’s H/W/S victory, gives the Lions bragging rights for this spring.

North Hunterdon girls do whatever it takes to win H/W/S track team crown

Posted: May 20, 2017 | Entry Type: Post

The Lions stormed to the team trophy at Saturday’s Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex championship at Wallkill Valley with 117.5 points to runner-up Hunterdon Central’s 82. That North Hunterdon won as a team wasn’t all that surprising, though some had thought Pope John XXIII (fourth at 53.5, behind the hosts in third at 54) might offer a major challenge. But the way the Lions took their prize was what was commanded attention. From distances to hurdles to throws, North stormed ahead for every point.

Three examples:

1) At the shot put ring, Delaware Valley’s Alli Beljan had just thrown a personal-best 34 feet on the penultimate toss of the competition to seemingly deny the Lions’ Carla Faust a gold. Until, that is, Faust hit a personal-best 34-10 toss on the very last throw of the meet.

“It was all about improving the points for my team,” Faust said. “That’s what drove me throw a PR.”

2) In the 100-meter high hurdles, the Lions faced major challenges from Kiki Darrell of Pope John and Sydney Villani of Hunterdon Central. But North’s Megan Stenberg, Jill Paciga and Emma Mikitiuk dug down and had an answer as they swept the top three spots to hand their team 24 precious points from one event.

“(Hurdle coach) Shane Berry wanted us to go 1-2-3,” said Stenberg, who won the final in 15.38 seconds. “He told us to picture us winning and coming down to finish line with each other. And when we did (head) coach Sean Walsh told us it was one of his favorite moments in all his coaching years.”

3) In the 3,200-meter run, super Lion sophomore Elena DiMarcello was locked in a fierce and tight battle with Pope John’s Anna Campbell. DiMarcello had just come off a spectacular 800 that she won in a blazing 2:14.49. How much would she have left to hold off Campbell? Plenty. DiMarcello shifted to a higher gear and won in 10 minutes, 50.40 seconds – only she has run faster in the lehighvalleylive region this spring – almost seven seconds faster than Campbell in second.

Girls Lacrosse: Second half burst pushes Westfield past North Hunterdon in N2G4 quarterfinal

Posted: | Entry Type: Post

WESTFIELD — Nicole Perez paced the Lions with a hat trick as Maeve Green and Abby Miller found the back of the cage one time each. Pauline Jaffe made seven saves.

North Hunterdon garnered the first lead of the game after Green scoring nine minutes into the game. With both defenses hounding the opposing offenses into low percentage shots and turnovers, goals were hard to come by until Westfield found its footing around the 10-minute mark when the Blue Devils netted four straight goals in a span of six and a half minutes.

The Lions started their comeback attempt towards the end of the first half, netting two goals thanks to Perez and Miller in the final minute to make it a one-goal game.

Once the second half commenced, however, it was all Westfield as it scored the first seven goals out of the break.

North Hunterdon pulls another upset, downs No. 7 Don Bosco Prep

The North Hunterdon varsity baseball team has won eight of nine games. And with a 2-1 win over Don Bosco Prep, No. 7 in the NJ.com Top 20, on Wednesday, the Lions have now won two games against Top 10 teams in the last 10 days.

The pitching combo of Matt Busher and Tim Schumacher got it done for North Hunterdon (15-8), with Busher tossing four scoreless innings before Schumacher carried it the rest of the way.

Offensively, North Hunterdon did its damage in the second inning. After John Macce’s leadoff single and a fielder’s choice put a runner in scoring position, Grant Sible laced a full-count pitch down the left field line for an RBI double. Justin Johnson doubled the lead with an RBI single.

North Hunterdon, which won its section as the ninth seed last year, is 13-7 with a six-game winning streak and winners of eight of its last nine games, which included revenge wins over Ridge and Montgomery.

North has only lost one game by more than three runs this season. The Lions are expected to be the No. 13th seed in North Jersey Section 2, Group 4 and would play at the fourth seed, which is expected to be Phillipsburg (11-7) or Watchung Hills (11-8), teams they have lost to.

Grant Sible is batting .362 for the Lions with four homers, 14 RBI and 11 of his 21 hits have been for extra bases. John Macce is batting .362 with 16 RBI and 16 runs scored, Matt Busher is hitting .413 with 12 RBI and 17 runs, Matt Wagner is hitting .379 and Billy Russo .320. Tim Schumacher is 4-0 pitching with an ERA of 1.81, Jack Kennedy is 3-2 with a 1.61 ERA and Busher is 3-2 with an ERA of 1.75.

“The pitching has kept us in every game, but now we’re putting the ball in play and making the routine plays on defense,” said North’s veteran skipper Mike Kane, whose club is averaging 5.6 runs per game, while giving up 3.5. “We’re really starting to click and there’s no reason to think we can’t do what we did last year.”
