CN Softball Coach of the Year: Anthony Rotondo, North Hunterdon
Anthony Rotondo isn’t going to feign surprise that the North Hunterdon High School softball team went from sub-.500 also-ran to Group IV state finalist in one offseason.
The Lions fourth-year head coach is the first to admit his team’s rebound from a 14-16 campaign – the program’s first losing season since 2001 – was something he expected. After all, North had competed in one of the state’s toughest conferences and played a loaded up non-league schedule against some of the state’s top programs last year, winning a few, but losing most, despite playing competitively, sometimes until the final inning.
But even the 2017 Courier News Softball Coach of the Year couldn’t have expected how this season would play out, as North Hunterdon finished 24-5, just a game behind Montgomery in the Skyland Conference Raritan Division race, advanced to the final of the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Tournament, and won the NJSIAA North 2 Group IV championship, falling by a run in the state Group IV final,

North Hunterdon’s DiMarcello sisters make last track meet together memorable
Not many families walked away from the NJSIAA Meet of Champions with as much hardware as the DiMarcello clan of North Hunterdon did.
Senior Annaand sophomore Ellie each took home two medals from Saturday’s meet at Northern Burlington.
“I was really happy with how I did,” said the Dartmouth-bound Anna, who was fourth in the 1,600-meter run and a part of the Lions’ 3,200-meter relay that came in fifth. “Medalling at the Meet of Champions is really special.”
And in this case, really exciting.
Ellie finished second in the 1,600 via judges’ decision as she and Kingsway senior Rachel Vick finished in a dead heat in 4 minutes, 52.69 seconds. Anna wasn’t far behind in 5:00.49. The North Hunterdon relay posted the best time in the lehighvalleylive.com region this spring – and No. 10 all-time – at 9:18.13.

Ellie DiMarcello takes Silver at Meet of Champions girls 1,600-meter in photo finish, 2017
Kingsway‘s Rachel Vick won the girls 1,600 race at the NJSIAA Track and Field Meet of Champions in a virtual dead heat with North Hunterdon‘s Elena DiMarcello.
With DiMarcello leading in the final meters, Vick made a late kick and leaned at the line as both runners finished with a 4:52.69. The decision went to the video with the Kingsway senior being given the nod.
Officials broke down Vick’s winning time as 4:52.6810 to DiMarcello’s 4:52.6847. Randolph’s Abby Loveys was third in 4:58.90.

9 local hot spots at NJSIAA Meet of Champions track and field
DiMarcellos in the mix. North Hunterdon’s DiMarcello sisters – senior Anna and sophomore Ellie – could factor in four races. Anna is the No. 18 seed in the 3,200 at 11:07 and would need a huge time drop to medal (top 8), but don’t count her out. Ellie repeating her PR of 2:12 in the 800 would probably medal (she is #9 seed at 2:13). But the intrigue lies more in the 1,600 and the 3,200 relay. Ellie is the #2 seed (4:51) in the 1,600 and Anna 10th (4:59 but she has run 4:56). A sister medal double would be remarkable. If Ellie can turn the tables on top-seed Vick (4:49) who edged her in a terrific race at the Group 4 meet it would be doubly so. But the relay, where the Lions are seeded #7 at 9:24 but have gone 9:21, offers the most fascination. The DiMarcellos won’t be fresh, depending on what open races they run, but if the decision is to have them run one open race each and then load up the relay North could really run a corker of a race. Lion archrival Ridge owns the No. 1 seed at 9:14 but has run 8:55; that’s beyond North Hunterdon, but 9:10 and a nice medal may not be.

• Meghan Graham: She had a single, a double and a triple, finishing just a home run shy of the cycle for North Hunterdon. She also scored the Lions’ lone run of the game in the bottom of the first.
• Maggie Swan: North Hunterdon‘s pitcher was strong throughout the game, the two runs she allowed in the sixth inning the only blemish on her line. Congratulations to Ellie DiMarcello who ran a spectacular time of 4 minutes, 51.44 seconds in the Group 4 1,600-meter run at Egg Harbor Township High School. Both Anna DiMarcello and the relay automatically qualified for the Meet of Champions.
Just missing out on automatic qualifying were Lion junior Emma Mikitiuk (seventh in the triple jump at 36-0¾) and sophomore Gabrielle Beneducci (10th in a 2017 regional-best 1:04.83 in the 400 hurdles) but both may get wild-card bids to the Meet of Champions.
