Jack Stagaard, Nasir Ball and Phillipsburg stay undefeated, hand N. Hunterdon first loss
PHILLIPSBURG — Phillipsburg could have been completely derailed when star running back Joe Green went out with an injury on Friday on the first drive against North Hunterdon, and one of the most anticipated games of the season could have lost some of its luster.
But Green’s absence simply set the stage for other Stateliners to provide heroics.

West Jersey supremacy, playoff seeds at stake for undefeated P’burg and N. Hunterdon
The big Non-Public powerhouses in North Jersey get plenty of attention, and the top squads in South Jersey do as well. But West Jersey football has been strong all season, and that culminates with the NJ.com/Star-Ledger Game of the Week for Week 8 with a pair of undefeated teams facing off — No. 16 Phillipsburg and North Hunterdon.
It’s a battle for West Jersey supremacy, a Mid-State 38 showdown after which the winner will likely find itself in the NJ.com Top 20 and the loser will have its first loss of the season. But even more than that, it’s a potential preview of the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 4 final — if the season ended today, North Hunterdon would have the top seed and Phillipsburg would have the second.

North Hunterdon’s Matt Busher voted Courier News Football Player of the Week
Congratulation to Matt Busher who was voted the Courier News Football Player of the Week
While the situations might seem frenetic and tense, for Matt Busher they’re no different than fishing for bass with his buddies on a hazy summer afternoon. Mr. Cool at quarterback simply goes about his business like it’s no big deal, focusing in the moment.
Three weeks ago, Busher helped North Hunterdon High School rally from 21 down in the fourth quarter to beat power Bridgewater-Raritan. Last Friday against Hillsborough, Busher connected with Griffin Honthy for a 52-yard touchdown with 11.4 seconds left for a 38-31 win to remain unbeaten.
So the Lions had to drive 62 yards with 31.3 seconds left in a 31-31 game — no big deal.
“It kind of felt like we were just going on another drive,” Busher said, “and it was just another play because making plays like that is something that we do all game.”
The dream season just keeps rolling for the Lions and Busher, who threw for 288 yards with three touchdowns and 94 rushing yards and two more scores against Hillsborough.
It’s all been working. The 6-foot, 187-pounder has thrown for 1,601 yards and completed 53 percent of his 164 passes with 356 rushing yards. In 2016, he threw for 1,386 yards and rushed for 594. For all his football glory, he’ll be pitching next season at Old Dominion University. While baseball and football are clearly different, he’s able to draw some similarities between the sports.
For one, football has helped build his arm strength in baseball. He also enjoys controlling the pace and the energy of the game. A bulldog. Instead of a table setter, he’s like a tone setter.
Mazzetta said, “He’s confident, but he’s not overconfident. He stays grounded.”

Hunterdon County Democrat boys, girls soccer update: South boys make history, North girls stun Central
The Lions extended their winning streak to five games with a 3-0 victory over Ridge — Dominic Russillo, Gabe Volpe and Gehrig Anderson scored in that one — but their streak and their hopes for county tournament glory halted there.
North (8-7) bowed to H/W/S Tournament second seed Hackettstown on Saturday by a 1-0 score in the semifinals, thereby denying the Lions a chance to cement an All-Hunterdon H/W/S final.
The North Hunterdon girls may have registered one of the most resounding victories in Hunterdon County history with a true shocker of a verdict on Saturday.
The third-seeded Lions received goals from Alison Cafaro and Madeline Wolf to defeat second-seeded and defending champion Hunterdon Central, 2-1, in the semifinal round of the H/W/S Tournament, thereby halting Central’s 20-game win streak in the tournament.
Central, the five-time defending champion, had not lost in the H/W/S since bowing to High Point in the 2011 semifinals.
North (9-4), which has not won a tri-county title since 2008, will meet ninth-seeded Newton (16-4) for the championship on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Warren Hills.
