Spring Sports Registration 2024

Posted: January 26, 2024 | Entry Type: Post

Aspen will be open to accept spring sports registration from February 7 to March 5, 2024.  Spring sports offered at North Hunterdon High School are: Baseball, Softball, Boys & Girls Lacrosse, Boys Tennis, Boys Volleyball, Boys & Girls Track & Field, and Boys & Girls Golf. Click here for start dates and tryout information.

If your child is interested in participating in spring sports, please log into your parent Aspen account, click on Page Directory on left hand side, then click on North Sport.  Fill out the Consent for Participation Form and Health History Update (these forms must be completed for each sports season your child participates).  A valid physical form must be on file in the health office, meaning one that has not expired within 365 days of the sport’s start date.

There is a requirement for students to complete for sports registration.  Student-athletes must go into their student Aspen account, click on Page Directory, click on NH Student, and complete the Sport Wellness Acknowledgement Form.  Students will need to watch the NJSIAA Opioid information video and read the Sudden Cardiac Death pamphlet from NJDOE then click Yes for each and submit the form.  These two items are in the parent Consent for Participation Form, but students need to also acknowledge that they have read/watched the items before they can participate in sports.

ImPact baseline test for concussions is required for sports and is valid for two years. Starting this year, Impact test will be done online. All registered athletes will be sent a personalized link via their school email to complete Impact test at home prior to the start of sports practice. Only new students or those whose test has expired will have to complete the Impact test (primarily freshmen and juniors). If you are unsure if an Impact test is needed, run the Checklist Report at the bottom of North Sport section in Aspen to show what requirements are missing.

If you have any questions about sports registration, please contact the Athletics Office at (908) 713-4199, option 4.

Parents can register their student for Fall sports from July 10 through August 4, 2023.  All forms must be filled out in Aspen, with the exception of the physical form. Physical forms are required for sports and intramurals and for any student new to the high school district.

Freshmen parents – if you did not receive the automated email to set up your parent Aspen account, please contact our database manager, Sherri DiMarcello, at sdimarcello@nhvweb.net and she will resend the information to you.

INCOMING FRESHMEN AND FALL SPORTS ATHLETES – Physicals:

All incoming freshmen and new students to the district must turn in a valid physical by August 1st to the school’s health office.

For Fall sports athletes who need to submit a new physical, we recommend a valid physical be turned into the health office at least two weeks prior to start date of the sport so there is no delay in practicing. School physician must review all physicals before athlete is cleared to start practice. A valid physical is one that is dated within 365 days of the start date of the sport.

The original and signed physical form must be dropped off or mailed to the health office – keep a copy for your records. The only exception is freshmen parents can turn in a photocopy of a current physical as their child’s previous school may have the original. For a blank physical form, please visit the health office website – http://www.nhvweb.net/nhhs/healthoffice/.

Summer 2022 Intramurals Registration

Posted: May 31, 2022 | Entry Type: Post

Dear North Hunterdon Parents/Guardians:

A few North Hunterdon High School sports teams will be running summer intramurals/workouts during the summer of 2022, including: Field Hockey, Football, and Boys & Girls Lacrosse. If your child is interested in participating in one or more of the above sports’ workouts, registration is required in Aspen, see instructions below. Other sports are running summer camps through outside organizations (some are age restrictive) and you can view those offerings on the athletics website, click here.

Schedule:
Summer intramurals will begin after June 15th
. For specific start dates, please check the summer intramural/workout schedule on the athletics website: click here and scroll to bottom.  If you have any questions, please email the coach for that sport.

Registration Window:
Registration in Aspen is required for summer intramurals/workouts and Aspen will be open to complete registration forms from today, May 31st through June 13th.

Instructions to Complete Registration:
If your child would like to participate in a summer intramural/workout, please log into your parent Aspen account, and on the homepage click on Page Directory on left hand side. Then click on North Intramural.  Fill out the Consent for Participation Form and Health History Update. In the Consent for Participation Form, you will select “Intramurals-Summer” as this selection allows your child to participate in more than one intramural/workout without having to register twice.

Your child must also have a valid physical on file in the North Hunterdon health office to participate; physical must be dated within one year of the start date of summer intramural to be valid. A valid ImPact baseline concussion test is also required if your child has not had one or it expired (mostly applies to rising freshmen and juniors); dates for ImPact testing will be as follows: June 1st (Football & Girls Lacrosse) at 5:30pm in Room 212, and June 2nd (Field Hockey and Boys Lacrosse at 5:30pm in Room 212. These are the only dates in which you can complete the ImPact Test and if you do not complete the ImPact Test you will have to wait until the Fall. This means you will not be able to participate in Summer workouts. If you cannot make your respective date or if you have any questions, please contact athletic trainer Tyler Roseberry at troseberry@nhvweb.net.

For parents of incoming freshmen, you will need to complete annual Health Forms as well in Aspen. In your parent Aspen account, click on Page Directory on left hand side of homepage, then click on Health Forms. You need to complete the Emergency Information and Over-the-Counter Authorization Forms and any other forms listed that pertain to your child, such as asthma or diabetes.

RE: Return-to-Play Update – Virtual Contact Period

The NJSIAA Sports Advisory Task Force is pleased to provide the following virtual contact periods for each sport listed below. This task force recognizes the importance of socially and emotionally engaging student-athletes with their coaches and teammates, while also helping them to prepare physically and mentally for their upcoming season. However, it is important for all coaches to remember that participation in any sport that is in season must take priority over virtual workouts or virtual meetings for any out of season sport.

Below is a summary of virtual contact, practice start and season end dates for each sport:

Winter Sports Registration

Posted: October 30, 2020 | Entry Type: Post

Aspen will be open to accept Winter sports registration from November 2 through November 24, 2020. Winter sports offered at North Hunterdon High School are: Boys & Girls Basketball, Boys & Girls Fencing, Boys & Girls Swimming, Boys & Girls Winter Track, Wrestling, Winter Cheerleading and Cheer-Dance Team. As per the most recent update from NJSIAA, all Winter sport practices will begin on December 3, 2020. If we receive any further updates from NJSIAA, we will share them.

Unified Bowling and Unified Basketball will also be offered starting in January; registration window for Unified Sports will be November 2 thru December 11 (Unified sports are an inclusive program that partners students with and without disabilities as a team for training and competition).

Registration Forms:

If your child is interested in participating in Winter sports, please log into your parent Aspen account, click on Page Directory, and click on North Sport.  Fill out the Consent for Participation Form (select sport in the form) and Health History Update; both of these forms must be completed for each sports season your child participates. Make sure your annual health forms are also complete under Page Directory then Health Forms section. At the bottom of the North Sport section, you can run a checklist report to see if you are missing any registration requirements.

Physicals:

A valid physical form must be on file in the health office, meaning one that has not expired within 365 days of the sport’s start date (so physicals dated after December 3, 2019 are still valid). Please submit physicals as soon as you can as the school doctor must review physicals before athletes are cleared for practice.

Student Requirement for Registration:

There is one sports registration requirement that student-athletes must complete. Students must go into their student Aspen account, click on Page Directory, click on NH Student, and complete the Sport Wellness Acknowledgement Form.

ImPact Baseline Concussion Test:

An ImPact baseline concussion test is also required.  The test is valid for two years.  If your child is a new student to the district and never had a test or your student’s previous test expired, the athletic trainers will be reaching out to those students who need a new ImPact test for the winter season.

Any questions, please contact the health office at (908) 713-4171 or the athletics office at (908) 713-4152.

NHHS Winter Head Coaches:

Students should email the coach of the sport below if interested in participating so that the coaches can create an updated contact list of athletes. The coaches will be emailing out important information on Winter Sports over the next month.

Fall Athletic Events – Spectator Limit and Tickets

Posted: September 29, 2020 | Entry Type: Post

As games begin for our Fall sports, we wanted to send a reminder on the limits that are placed on spectators this year at high school athletic events. Per the NJSIAA, which is the governing body of high school athletics, the limit on number of spectators is the same limit the state has on outdoor gatherings.  Currently, outdoor gatherings are limited to 500 people with social distancing required.  Therefore, no more than 500 spectators will be allowed to attend a high school athletic event.

Please refer to the chart below for spectator recommendations and how ticket distribution will be handled for varsity football games, which is consistent among the schools in the Skyland Conference.

SPECTATOR PROCEDURES:

SPORT

RECOMMENDED ATTENDEES

REQUIREMENTS

Varsity Football, Cheerleading, Marching Band

Varsity game admission is by ticket ONLY. NHHS football players, cheerleaders and marching band members each purchase up to two tickets for $5 each to give to parents/family members. Visiting team also receives an allotted amount of tickets. No general spectators will be allowed as all 500 tickets will be distributed.

  • For away games, the home school will provide an allotted amount of tickets to NHHS for distribution to football players and cheerleaders that they will have to purchase.

Tickets, social distancing and masks required.

JV and Freshmen Football

Family of football players only.

Social distancing and masks required.

Girls Tennis

Family of tennis players only.

Social distancing and masks required.

Soccer

Family of soccer players only.

Social distancing and masks required.

Field Hockey

Family of field hockey players only.

Social distancing and masks required.

Cross Country

Family of cross country runners only. Required to remain in designated spectator areas. Ticketing process may occur at some locations.

Social distancing and masks required.

Please keep in mind that some away events might have protocols in place that vary from ours.  We will let you know about those locations as we receive the information, and we ask that you comply with any additional requirements other schools have decided to implement.

All varsity football home games and most home games of other varsity Fall sports will be livestreamed by the athletic video team. Live streamed events will be shared on their YouTube Channel – https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpk_CAUW-iLzdWkPpcTT9vg. Please subscribe to their channel so you don’t miss any events.

We know the community enjoys coming out to watch our athletic events, but unfortunately as we all know, this is not a normal school year.  We appreciate your cooperation with the NJSIAA guidelines and following health and safety protocols to prevent the spread of COVID-19 so our teams can keep on playing.

NJSIAA 50th Track Meet of Champions – Looking into our crystal ball

Posted: | Entry Type: Post
800-meter run:

So. Gavin Richards, North Hunterdon

Fast take: Richards comes in seeded 22nd with a best time of 1 minute, 56.05 seconds. He will also be on the Lions’ 3,200-meter relay (see below) which has championship aspirations, and there’s not much time between them. Could just be a warm-up for Richards, then; but he does have a blazing kick and could break that 1:56 barrier. Or he may not run at all.

1,600-meter run:

Sr. Ray Sellaro, North Hunterdon

Fast take: Like Richards, Sellaro will be on the 3,200 relay (he’s the anchor) but the space between the 1,600 and the relay is more forgiving. Sellaro’s 4:15.47 at the Group 4 meet earned him the No. 9 seed, but he wasn’t seriously pushed in that race and he probably has seconds to drop. Sellaro will have to drop, though, to contest the shore contingent of Christian Brothers’ Tim McInerney (4:10). Point Pleasant Boro’s Devin Hart (4:12) and Shore Regional’s Drew Maher (4:13). The winner will go under 4:10, we think. We also think Sellaro will set a new PR around 4:12 and make the medal stand.

3,200-meter relay:

Fast take: This could be something special. The Lions – probably Richards, juniors Dillon Adamy and Andrew Trapp and Sellaro – ran 7:52 at groups with all but Richards having run the 1,600 on a blazing hot day at Franklin. North Hunterdon, the fourth seed, will have fresher legs this time. Princeton’s 7:47 is the top seed, with Delsea at 7:49 and West Windsor-Plainsboro South at 7:51. It’s easy to see the winner under 7:45. The Lions may not reach the all-time regional mark of 7:46.69 (Southern Lehigh, 1983) but the school record (and No. 2 region all-time) of 7:48.67 run at the 1991 Penn Relays may fall. North should surely get a medal. And in the right race, it could be gold.

Sr. Connor Letko, North Hunterdon

Fast take: Letko, seeded 20th at 154-6, will need a big bump up to medal – but it can happen.

1,600-meter run:

So. Chloe Gonzalez, North Hunterdon

Fast take: There’s no shortage of girls ready to step up. Under 4:50 will almost certainly be necessary to win, and Gonzalez can get there with four consistent laps and just a bit more oomph on the final lap than at groups. The Lion school record of 4:47.7 run by the great Jodie Billota in 1987 may survive but we wager Gonzalez makes a run (sorry) at it.

3,200-meter run:

Jr. Emily Nugent, North Hunterdon

Fast take: This could well be an all-Hunterdon/Warren dual here as Westley is the No. 1 seed in 10:34.56 and Nugent No. 3 at 10:41.82 (Loveys of Randolph at 10:39.57) and only one other girl in the field having run under 10:50 (Sterling senior Madison Coppolino, 10:49.77). Nugent has been making steady improvement throughout the season and if she comes up with a career-best could push Westley. We hope she does – a sub-10:30 time would be neat (only five regional girls have ever done that).

Javelin:

So. Fiona Letko, North Hunterdon

Fast take: The sole regional girl in the field, Letko comes in as the No. 6 seed (125 feet, 9 inches). She has thrown 136 feet, and if she can equal that toss from early May at the Skyland meet she should medal. A top-three finish will probably need a throw of 145 feet or more, but Letko is capable of that kind of effort.

No. 11 North Hunterdon downs No. 9 Vineland in 10 innings for Group 4 title

Posted: | Entry Type: Post

One year after falling one run short of a state title, the Lions, No. 11 in the NJ.com Top 20, returned to the Group 4 State Championship and got it done by surviving a late onslaught, then topping No. 9 Vineland, 6-5, in 10 innings on Sunday evening at Kean University.

The Lions will continue their quest to be the best NJ High School softball team this Tuesday in the Meet of Champions Quarterfinals with third-seeded and No. 11 North Hunterdon (25-5) facing sixth-seeded Lodi Immaculate (20-7) at 7pm.

Check out the stars of the Group 4 State Championship:

Julia Apsel, North Hunterdon: Apsel was 2-for-4. She tripled in the fifth and singled and scored in North Hunterdon’s four-run fourth inning.

Jessica Nolan, North Hunterdon: Nolan laid down the squeeze bunt in the 10th inning that scored Cate Sand from third with what turned out to be the winning run. She also singled and scored a run in the third.

Taylor Hucke, North Hunterdon: Hucke was 2-for-4 with an RBI single and run scored in North Hunterdon’s four-run fourth.

Jensen Macaulay, North Hunterdon: The junior center fielder’s throw home cut down the potential winning run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh, buying three more innings for North Hunterdon to win the title.

A State title in the 1600 at last for North Hunterdon’s Ray Sellaro

Posted: June 1, 2018 | Entry Type: Post

The North Hunterdon senior capped off a remarkable, courageous comeback from a litany of injuries that even Job might have found overly daunting by winning a state championship in the 1,600-meter run at Franklin High School Friday afternoon.

Sellaro, who will run at Penn in college, posted a personal-best time of 4 minutes and 15.47 seconds to win his first state championship, holding off Sameer Das of West Windsor-Plainsboro South in 4:16.77. Sellaro qualified for the Meet of Champions, which will be June 9 at Northern Burlington High School.

Congratulations to Chloe Gonzalez for taking silver in the 1600m run. Emily Nugent for taking silver in the 3200m run and Fiona Letko for taking Bronze in the Javelin. All three have qualified for the Meet of Champions.

Rotondo get win #100 and punches ticket to the Group 4 Final

Posted: | Entry Type: Post

The Lions, No. 11 in the NJ.com Top 20, received a gritty performance in the circle from Maggie Swan and some timely hitting early in the game, and pulled out a 3-2 win over Mount Olive in the Group 4 semifinals at Mike Sheppard Sr. Field at Ivy Hill Park in Newark.

It also marked the 100th career win for North Hunterdon head coach Anthony Rotondo, who is in his fifth year leading the program. It was also a special victory, because it meant that he gets to coach his four seniors in Swan, Sophia Callari, Kady Johnson, and Jessica Nolan, for at least one more game.

“Any time we win it’s a blessing,” Rotondo said. “They’re amazing kids and to get a couple more days to be around them and coach them, that drives me. It’s great to have that. I told them that back to back appearances in the state championship, that is not easy to do.”

No. 11 North Hunterdon advances to 2nd straight Group 4 final with 3-2 win over Mount Olive

Posted: May 31, 2018 | Entry Type: Post

North Hunterdon stands just one win from its second state title in program history.

The win sends North Hunterdon to the Group 4 championship game for the second year in a row, where it is slated to take on Vineland, which defeated Montgomery 8-5 in the other semifinal earlier in the day. The final will be played either Saturday or Sunday at a time to be determined at Kean University in Union.

Maggie Swan gave up just two runs on four hits for the Lions, in which she struck out five and walked none in a complete-game effort. She also helped out her own cause by driving in a run via a sacrifice fly in the second inning. Jensen Macaulay also had a sacrifice fly in the second, and the Lions were able to chase Mount Olive starter Alyssa Borozan from the game after just two innings after getting five hits. Hanily and Taylor Hucke each had two hits for North Hunterdon.

Congratulations to the Lady Lions softball team for defeating Watchung Hills 1-0 in the NJSIAA State Sectional Championship in walk off fashion. Megan Hanily sacrifice bunted to push Brogan, the pinch runner, into scoring position with one out, but McCabe struck out the next batter to get within one out of extra innings before Julie Apsel’s game-winning single. Julie Apsel ended up with a perfect 3 hit day. Maggie Swan was the winning pitcher who gave up five hits and two walks with six strikeouts.

As a result of Apsel’s heroics, the Lions’ quest for another trip to the Group 4 final will face Mount Olive, which grabbed the North 1, Group 4 in 10 innings over Livingston, in a state semifinal matchup at 5 p.m. Thursday at Ivy Hill Park in Newark.
