{"id":160,"date":"2015-09-10T10:07:07","date_gmt":"2015-09-10T14:07:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nhvweb.net\/vhs\/socialstudies\/mmcgeehan\/?page_id=160"},"modified":"2015-09-10T10:07:07","modified_gmt":"2015-09-10T14:07:07","slug":"letter-to-parents","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.nhvweb.net\/vhs\/socialstudies\/mmcgeehan\/letter-to-parents\/","title":{"rendered":"Letter to Parents"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 August 27, 2015 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dear Parents\/Guardians:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Roots of Intolerance<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0is a course designed to introduce students to some very difficult concepts in human history. \u00a0The course will explore some of the darkest periods of recent history that involves mankind\u2019s worst treatment of one another. \u00a0The course will include units directed at the following: defining and identifying genocide, looking at the reasons why people turn to genocide as a solution to their \u201cproblems\u201d, the dilemma of the bystander, the United States\u2019 moral responsibility in regards to human rights violations and lastly what can individuals do to combat genocide and, more appropriately, the spread of intolerance among individuals. \u00a0This study will include looking at concepts such as the United State\u2019s failure to act in the face of certain atrocities (Rwanda in 1994, or the failure to bomb the railroad tracks leading to Auschwitz). \u00a0In addition, it will also include the psychological study of human nature to each other, in regards to groups, ethnicity, religion, etc. and the questions that study raises.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These concepts are being introduced to students in an attempt to have them evaluate their belief systems and what they accept as \u201ctrue\u201d in terms of messages from our politicians, community leaders and the media. \u00a0Higher order thinking will be required on the part of your student, as well as an ability to analyze first person accounts of these tragic events. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Week to week assignments will include readings from the text <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Defining the Horrific<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, journal entries and additional readings that will be assigned, either for class work or as homework. \u00a0Students will also work collaboratively throughout the course on projects both in and out of the classroom. \u00a0Directions and timelines will be given for those projects when they are assigned. \u00a0Students can expect to be quizzed and tested much like a typical Social Studies course. \u00a0Quizzes and tests may include multiple choice, true\/false, fill in the blanks, short answer, and essay questions.
