The concert band is the largest instrumental performing ensemble at Voorhees.\u00a0 Students that participate in concert band earn five fine arts credits per year.\u00a0 Concert band is open to woodwind, brass, and percussion players or any students that are interested in learning a new instrument and have clearance from Mr. Giannelli or Mr. Reynolds.<\/p>\n

Information that is different than, OR in addition to, Concert Band is highlighted in yellow.<\/span><\/p>\n

HONORS CONCERT BAND GRADES:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

P<\/strong>ARTICIPATION GRADES 40%<\/span> of Marking Period Grade:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. CLASS PARTICIPATION AND REHEARSAL TECHNIQUE GRADES:<\/span>\u00a0 <\/strong>You will receive a grade in this area typically once every week. The grade will be based on your participation in class\/rehearsal.\u00a0 Your grade can be affected by not being prepared for class, performing incorrectly, being on your cellphone, chewing gum, being late to rehearsal, etc.<\/li>\n
  2. INDIVIDUAL PRACTICE GRADES:<\/strong><\/span> There will be some days that are given for individual practice time during the marking period. \u00a0You will be graded on the amount of time that you use wisely and\/or what you get accomplished. At times, students will also be assigned exercises on SMARTMUSIC to build their endurance or to challenge them on their instruments; students will receive participation grades for this type of assignment as opposed to receiving a performance grade (which would be based mainly on accuracy versus completion).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. SECTIONAL GRADES:<\/strong><\/span> Students will have the opportunity to work together within their instrumental section to practice as a group or to complete a task. When receiving a sectional grade, students will receive individual participation grades based on their participation in the sectional activities.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. PRIVATE LESSON \/ CHECK-IN GRADES: <\/strong><\/span><\/span>Each student will be required to schedule one 24 minute private lesson per month with the director. This lesson can be during a study hall, directed study, or after school from 2:30-3:10. Schedule times in advance so that you do not run out of time at the end of the month.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    P<\/strong>ERFORMANCE GRADES 40%<\/span> of Marking Period Grade:<\/strong><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. TESTING<\/span><\/strong> GRADES:<\/strong><\/span> Testing may include written tests, performances of prepared musical excerpts, or small group performances. Performance testing grades still allow for a portion of the grade to be based on completion, however the majority of the grade is based on accuracy.<\/li>\n
    2. MAJOR SCALE TESTS: <\/strong>Each Honors Concert Band Student will be required to learn and memorize all 12 Major scales for the full range of their instrument. These scales will be done 3 per marking period. <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    3. PRIVATE LESSON ASSIGNMENT:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Honors Concert Band Students will be assigned lesson exercises to prepare on their own in Smartmusic. There will be one assignment due after each marking period.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    4. CONCERT <\/strong><\/span>PERFORMANCE PARTICIPATION GRADES:<\/span>\u00a0 <\/strong>Concert Band is a <\/span>performance<\/em> class.\u00a0 Attendance at a concert in which the band performs is mandatory.\u00a0 The only legitimate excuses for missing an in-person performance are illness or a death in the family.\u00a0\u00a0 Absences of this nature must be excused with a note from a parent addressed and delivered to the instructor personally, and preferably prior to the concert.\u00a0 Unexcused absences are not tolerated.\u00a0 <\/span>You will receive two grades for each performance.<\/strong>\u00a0 View the CONCERT BAND PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE<\/a> <\/strong>and get these dates in your calendar ASAP.\u00a0 Please note that there may be additional performances.\u00a0 We would never schedule a concert without trying to give at least a month notice.\u00a0 The following grades can be received for your performance participation grading area:\u00a0<\/span>\n
        \n
      • performed in concert with proper performance attire 100% (A)<\/li>\n
      • performed in concert without proper performance attire 85% (B)<\/li>\n
      • failed to attend concert 0% (F)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
      • SOLO INSTRUMENTAL PERFORMANCE:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0Each student will have to prepare a solo instrumental piece throughout the course of the school year. There are two options available for this assignment: prepare Region Band Audition (and go through with the audition) OR perform at a VHS Solo Night.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
          \n
        • \u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          HONORS SPECIFIC GRADES 20% of Marking Period Grade:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

            \n
          1. PRIVATE LESSON CHECK-IN GRADES<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
          2. RECORDED <\/strong><\/span>LISTENING EXAMPLE GRADES:<\/span>\u00a0 <\/strong>You will have to complete one listening assignment per marking period. This assignment will be completed through Google Classroom.<\/span><\/li>\n
          3. CONCERT PERFORMANCE & RESPONSE: <\/strong><\/span>Each student will be required to attend one instrumental performance per semester. Following the performance, students will compose a <\/span>concert<\/span> response paper.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            CLASSROOM RULES:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

              \n
            1. Be on time to class.<\/li>\n
            2. Have your instrument and music every day.<\/li>\n
            3. No talking while someone is standing on the podium or when someone else is talking.<\/li>\n
            4. Treat others with respect.\u00a0<\/li>\n
            5. No gum, food, or drink in the band room during rehearsal.<\/li>\n
            6. Cell phones should not be out or used during rehearsal (unless requested by the director).<\/li>\n
            7. Take care of your instrument and be aware of other instruments in the room.<\/li>\n
            8. Treat the music rooms with respect.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n


              PERFORMANCE ATTIRE:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

              Students participating in Concert Band are required to wear one of the following uniform options for performances. These items can be purchased on your own, or you can choose to purchase a uniform through the school. We will distribute uniform ordering information to students and parents\/guardians via email.<\/p>\n

              • Black tuxedo (or black dress pants and black jacket)<\/li>\n
              • White shirt (tuxedo shirt or dress shirt)<\/li>\n
              • Black bow tie<\/li>\n
              • Black shoes and socks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                OPTION 2:<\/p>\n

                • Black dress pants<\/li>\n
                • Black dress shirt (tuxedo shirt or dress shirt)<\/li>\n
                • Black bow tie<\/li>\n
                • Black shoes and socks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                  OPTION 3:<\/p>\n

                  • Full length black dress (conservative neckline and short sleeves)<\/li>\n
