{"id":4248,"date":"2017-08-09T14:55:16","date_gmt":"2017-08-09T18:55:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nhvweb.net\/vhs\/home\/?p=4248"},"modified":"2017-08-09T14:55:16","modified_gmt":"2017-08-09T18:55:16","slug":"2017-2018-back-to-school-letter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nhvweb.net\/vhs\/home\/2017-2018-back-to-school-letter\/","title":{"rendered":"2017-2018 Back to School Letter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dear Parents and Students of Voorhees High School,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I hope that you are having a relaxing and rewarding summer.\u00a0 It has been a busy summer at Voorhees in on our preparation for the new school year.\u00a0\u00a0 Enjoy the remaining weeks, and we look forward to seeing you.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Please take a moment to review the following information:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Opening of School<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All students will report for a regular day of school on Thursday, August 24.\u00a0 Student schedules are now viewable in Aspen, our student information system.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Our guidance staff has made extraordinary efforts to personalize each student\u2019s schedule.\u00a0 Long hours have been spent planning, assisting in course selections, and refining conflicts.\u00a0 This process should have effectively addressed any of your scheduling concerns.\u00a0 Please realize the amount of effort already expended and the constraints of course availability, class size, and room availability.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>School Administration<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Starting this year, Voorhees High School has moved to an assistant principal model for supervision of students and subject areas.\u00a0 The following are the areas of responsibility:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mr. Simpson<\/strong>: Class of 2018, Business, Fine and Practical Arts, Social Studies, and\u00a0World Language<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mr. Maslonka<\/strong>: Class of 2019, English and Math<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mrs. Hammerstone<\/strong>: Class of 2020, Guidance, Science, and STEM<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mrs. Kieffer<\/strong>: Class of 2021, Child Study Team and Special Education<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Senior G.A.I.N. Time<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Please note that with the new Rolling Drop-Block Schedule, during the lunch blocks, seniors will be assigned to a designated classroom for the study hall portion of the block.\u00a0 This study hall is <strong>not<\/strong> considered G.A.I.N. Time, and students must report to the designated classroom.\u00a0 This is because we cannot accommodate the entire senior class in the eating areas during the lunches.\u00a0\u00a0 G.A.I.N. Time will be for the 55 minute regular block study halls.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Student Parking<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Due to construction, <strong><em><u>only seniors<\/u><\/em><\/strong> will be considered for a parking spot.<\/p>\n<p>Seniors, an e-mail was sent on August 9<sup>th<\/sup> regarding applying for a parking sticker.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>TEACHNJ Act<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the requirements of the TEACHNJ Act is that teachers, with approval from their principals, set Student Growth Objectives (SGOs) for their students at the start of the year and are assessed on whether those objectives are met at the end of the year. National, state, or district-developed assessments should be used where available to identify the measurable goals for each objective. Teachers also may use collaboratively-developed assessments for SGOs, including portfolios of student work. Teachers are required to set at least two SGOs for the 2017-2018 school year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Please understand that due to these requirements our students may be given pre-assessments in their classes during the first weeks of school.\u00a0 These pre-assessments will be used as a formative tool to measure growth and will not affect the student\u2019s grade.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Parent\/Student Handbook<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Parent-Student Handbook and calendar is available on the Voorhees website. Most of the information disseminated to you will be online.\u00a0 If you do not have access to the Internet, please inform us so that we may make arrangements to mail materials to you.\u00a0 We encourage you to become familiar with the information contained in the handbook and mark the dates of important school events throughout the year.
