and values of North Hunterdon High School.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Excellent written expression of well-formulated ideas is a fundamental skill for academic and career success.\u00a0 Plagiarism interferes with the assessment and feedback process that is necessary in order to promote academic growth.\u00a0 Plagiarism defrauds the instructor with a false view of a student\u2019s strengths and weaknesses.\u00a0 It may prevent further instruction in areas of weakness and delay the student in reaching his or her potential.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span>Plagiarism includes:<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">\u00b7<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">taking someone else\u2019s assignment or portion of an assignment and submitting it as your own<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">\u00b7submitting material written by someone else or rephrasing the ideas of another without giving the author\u2019s name or source<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">\u00b7<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">presenting the work of tutors, parents, siblings, or friends as your own<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">\u00b7submitting purchased papers as your own<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">\u00b7<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">submitting papers from the Internet written by someone else as your own<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">\u00b7<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: Arial\">supporting plagiarism by providing your work to others, whether you believe it will be copied or not<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><strong><span style=\"font-size: small\">Cheating<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">Rationale: Cheating demonstrates a lack of integrity and character that is inconsistent with the goals and values of North Hunterdon High School.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">Education is based on learning specific skills, forming lifelong work habits, and developing mature coping skills according to each student\u2019s unique abilities.\u00a0 Stress propels students to make unethical choices.\u00a0 When students choose to cheat, it may be a symptom of more serious problems such as inappropriate class placement, over-commitment to extra-curricular activities, and\/or academic desperation.\u00a0 The compromise of their values through cheating may lead to loss of self-esteem, as the students are often painfully aware of their shortcomings and fight a tiring battle to preserve their images at the cost of their ethics.\u00a0 True self-esteem is based on competence.\u00a0 Cheating robs students of their opportunity to become competent.\u00a0 Assignments should be considered individual unless the instructor states otherwise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">Cheating includes:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">\u00b7<\/span><span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">copying, faxing, emailing, or in any way duplicating assignments that are turned in, wholly or in part, as original work<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">\u00b7<\/span><span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">exchanging assignments with other students, either handwritten or computer generated, whether you believe they will be copied or not<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">\u00b7<\/span><span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">using any form of memory aid during tests or quizzes without the expressed permission of the instructor\u00b7<\/span><span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">\u00b7<\/span><span>        <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">using a computer or other means to translate an assignment from one language into another language and submitting it as an original translation\u00b7<\/span><span>    <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">\u00b7<\/span><span style=\"font-size: x-small\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">giving or receiving answers during tests or quizzes.\u00a0 It is your responsibility to secure your papers, so other students will not have the opportunity to copy from you or the temptation to do so<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">\u00b7<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Arial\">taking credit for group work when you have not contributed an equal or appropriate share toward the final result<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">\u00b7<\/span><span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">accessing a test or quiz for the purpose of determining the questions in advance of its administration. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">\u00b7<\/span><span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">using summaries\/commentaries (<em>Cliffs Notes<\/em>, <em>Spark Notes<\/em>, etc.) in lieu of reading the assigned materials.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1 align=\"left\"><strong><span>Alternatives to cheating and plagiarism:<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n<h1 align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">No student needs to cheat or plagiarize.\u00a0 North Hunterdon High School provides numerous support services for students to help them achieve success honorably.\u00a0 Students who advocate for themselves and seek appropriate help when they need it will not need to cheat or plagiarize.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: width=\"601\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">Make certain that you understand your assignments and the grading assessment that will be used.\u00a0 If you have questions about an assignment or an assessment, talk to your instructor.\u00a0\u00a0 Do not rely solely upon a classmate for clarification.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"37\"><span style=\"font-family: width=\"601\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">Do not read or scan someone else\u2019s paper before writing your own.\u00a0 Some of the ideas in the other person\u2019s paper may be ideas that you would have used, but you will now need to credit the person whose paper you read for those ideas.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"37\"><span style=\"font-family: parental support in their children\u2019s achievement and ethical development:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">Parental support of academic achievement and ethical development is fundamental to students\u2019 long-term success.\u00a0 The following behaviors will assist parents in promoting true student achievement:<\/span><\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" you suspect your child is experiencing difficulty in a class, please contact the teacher.\u00a0 The sooner the problem is identified, the sooner steps can be taken to alleviate it.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"37\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">5.<\/span><\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"601\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">If your child is caught cheating and you are called, please remember that this is a learning experience; help your child to accept the consequences for his\/her inappropriate student handbook for discussion of consequences for plagiarism and cheating.\u00a0 Be aware that cheating is often a joint undertaking.\u00a0 Cheating is always harmful to all parties involved.\u00a0 It sacrifices the integrity of the person who provides the materials and robs the copier of the opportunity to learn.\u00a0 When cheating is not an individual activity, all parties involved are equally guilty and will be subject to the same consequences.\u00a0 Intellectual honesty on the parts of all students is fundamental to their ethical
