Ceramics 2

 

New Jersey Core Content Standards:**

1.1  Aesthetics – All students will use aesthetics knowledge in the creation of, and in response to visual arts.

1.2  Creation & Performance – All students will utilize those skills, media, methods and technologies appropriate to each art form in the creation., performance and presentation of visual art.

1.3  Elements and Principles of the Arts – All students will demonstrate an understanding of the elements and principles of the arts in visual art.

1.4  Critique – All students will develop, apply ad reflect upon knowledge of the process of critique.

1.5  History/Culture – All students will understand and analyze the role, development, and continuing influence of the arts to world cultures, history and society.

Length of Course: 18 Weeks

Prerequisite: Ceramics 1

 

Ceramics II students will continue to develop techniques and skills learned in Ceramics I. Emphasis will be placed upon design improvement and specialized throwing skills.

 

 

Ceramics II will develop student’s ability to communicate ideas and basic 3 dimensional design skills according to the core standards for the visual arts.

 

General Course Objectives with Relevant Vocabulary

Upon Completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Understand the procedures for firing electric and gas kilns,

         bisque and glaze cycles. (1.2)

 

  • Expand the simple cylindrical forms into a wider variety of

         shapes. (1.2, 1.3)

 

  • Demonstrate an understanding of good design and proportion

         from a study of contemporary ceramics. (1.1, 1.2, 1.3)

 

  • Expand and combine hand building and throwing techniques to

         make more original pieces. (1.2)

 

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the process of critique. (1.4)

 

  • Become familiar with contemporary and historical ceramics. (1.1, 1.5)

Mastery Level to Receive Credit for this Course:

 

Students must receive an average of 63 or better and comply with the school district’s policy in order to receive credit for this course. The following grading system will be used:

A = 96.5

A-    =91

B+ = 88

B = 84.5

B-     = 81

C+ = 78

C = 74.5

C-= 71

D+= 68

D= 65

Any grade below 65 is a failing grade.

Curriculum Topics & Suggested Lessons

 

The following timeframe is a guide that can be used in teacher planning.  Each class has a personality and an ability level of its own and will be considered while planning for the year. 

Performance Objectives:

1. At the end of the first four weeks the student will have a better understanding of kiln types, firing cyc1es and procedures, stacking and evaluating firing results.

 

2. At the end of nine weeks the student will have explored the making of taller, larger forms, c10sed forms, improved trimming.

 

3. At the end of 14 weeks the student will have explored the making of handled forms, sectional forms, and sculptural pottery.

4.  At the end of 18 weeks the student will have completed glazing of all finished pottery; shown a record of procedures and contributed to the loading and firing of bisque and glazed ware.
