{"id":14,"date":"2016-05-19T17:33:54","date_gmt":"2016-05-19T17:33:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nhvweb.net\/steam\/?page_id=14"},"modified":"2016-06-06T15:32:38","modified_gmt":"2016-06-06T15:32:38","slug":"in-our-schools","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.nhvweb.net\/steam\/in-our-schools\/","title":{"rendered":"In Our Schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">STEM Committee 2015-2016 \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Accomplishments<\/span><\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Science National Honor Society Established at both NHHS and VHS<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Math Science Articulation Plan<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Attend and participate in staff development activities that introduce the cross curricular overlap between math and science (and other STEAM subjects in the future)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Review the math practices documents and identify areas where the science and math overlap.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Meet with Math Department at provided in-service to develop joint lessons for topics<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Joint Observations with Math\/Science Department for interrater reliability<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Joint Grant Approved by NHEF and VHEF to train Science Departments in Inquiry Based Instructional Model to support this aspect of the Next Generation Science Standards<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Vertical Curriculum Writing Project Grades 6-12.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All Sending Districts and Both High Schools have participated in this project. Regional Units of Instruction for Science grades 6-8 have been created based on the NJ Model Curriculum and Next Generation Science Standards.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Added Online Chemical Inventory<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Increased the number of and focus of the articulation meetings with sending districts to help strengthen and align math programs in all districts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">New computer course for the upcoming school year in both schools \u2013 AP Computer Science Principles.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Both schools encouraged the entire student body to participate in One Hour of Code in December.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Math Awareness month celebrated at both schools. \u00a0Guest speaker from Muhlenberg College came to North to discuss the theme <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Future of Prediction<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> through statistical analysis of baseball stats.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">More teachers are being educated to teach computer classes \u2013 two are earning computer science certification through CSTA.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Teachers attended the Ignite STEM Conference at Columbia University in April to gain ideas in encouraging more interest in programming.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Outcomes from this conference is a proposal to hold a Maker Fair in our district that would be held on a Saturday and open to the sending district students as well as to our own students.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Include Makey Makey kits in our Intro to Programming classes to encourage more interest.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hold a district-wide hackathon.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Voorhees Tech Ed\/Music lab was updated with a new projector, new computers and was used for all Tech Ed and Music Tech classes.
