Parents,<\/p>\n<p>For the first time in the history of North Hunterdon-Voorhees, we will be conducting virtual learning days!\u00a0 While this is certainly a big shift from our normal operations, it is something that we have been preparing for since our 1:1 Chromebook initiative began several years ago.\u00a0 \u00a0Below are some frequently asked questions that I received from parents and students about what to expect during this closure.<\/p>\n<p><b>Do the days count toward the 180 day state requirement?\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Yes!\u00a0 An\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.gov\/education\/broadcasts\/2020\/mar\/05\/Guidance%20Regarding%20Requirements%20for%20Public%20Health-Related%20School%20Closure.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.gov\/education\/broadcasts\/2020\/mar\/05\/Guidance%20Regarding%20Requirements%20for%20Public%20Health-Related%20School%20Closure.pdf\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.nj.gov\/education\/broadcasts\/2020\/mar\/05\/Guidance%2520Regarding%2520Requirements%2520for%2520Public%2520Health-Related%2520School%2520Closure.pdf&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1584365919222000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEgprwow_mWAHz_41STgcXdQAJeIg\" rel=\"nofollow\" >announcement from the NJ Dept of Education on March 5th<\/a>\u00a0allowed districts in NJ the ability to deliver instruction online that would count toward the 180 day state requirement.\u00a0 In other words, these COVID-19 closure days are to be considered school days.\u00a0 Students will have a significant amount\u00a0of work to do with the goal of making continued\u00a0educational progress for each student during every school day of the\u00a0closure.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>Will we lose spring break or change the date of graduation?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>No, at this point there are no plans for any calendar changes since the closure days count toward the 180 day requirement.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>How much time will students spend engaged\u00a0in learning activities\u00a0each day?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>4-5 hours.\u00a0 Teachers are planning activities\u00a0that should take students about 30-45 minutes per class each day.\u00a0 Parents are encouraged to help their students establish a routine and work area to complete their learning activities.\u00a0 Please note that Monday, March 16th is a professional development day for teachers.\u00a0 Virtual learning will begin for students on Tuesday, March 17th.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>Are there specific times that a student needs to be online?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Not necessarily.\u00a0 There are two ways that our teachers will design virtual learning.\u00a0 One way is through\u00a0<i><b>synchronous<\/b><\/i>\u00a0learning.\u00a0 In this method, the students will all be required to be virtually present in a chat room or online platform in order to interact with their teacher and students in realtime.\u00a0 Teachers have been instructed to schedule all synchronous learning to be aligned with the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhvweb.net\/nhhs\/home\/bell-schedules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/www.nhvweb.net\/nhhs\/home\/bell-schedules\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/www.nhvweb.net\/nhhs\/home\/bell-schedules\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1584365919222000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGFC10YOYoPlq6hiy01uvX5kT99Xg\">Two Hour Delayed Opening Bell Schedule\u00a0<\/a>so that students are not double booked with synchronous learning appointments.\u00a0 The other method of virtual\u00a0learning design is called\u00a0<b>asynchronous<\/b>.\u00a0 In this method, teachers design experiences that can be completed anytime throughout the day without the need for real-time, live feedback.\u00a0 Many teachers will be using this asynchronous method or a mixture of both methods.\u00a0 Teachers will be reaching out to all of their students and parents with information regarding the expectations for their\u00a0class by the end of the day on Monday.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>What type of activities will students be doing?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Students will be engaged in a variety of learning activities both online and offline.\u00a0 While online, students will access online textbooks, instructional videos, teacher created content and also commercially developed digital instructional materials.\u00a0 Students will create a variety of different forms of content including digital\u00a0portfolios, writings, videos and podcasts.\u00a0 Many teachers have identified content specific software and websites that your students will utilize.\u00a0 Students may also be assigned other offline activities\u00a0such as journaling physical\u00a0activity\u00a0for their physical education class or cooking for their family &amp; consumer science class.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>What do I do if I have technical difficulties?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The Technology Resource Center at NHHS and VHS is still open during the closure.\u00a0 Any student that is experiencing issues with their Chromebook should contact Mr. Crilly at <a href=\"mailto:ccrilly@nhvweb.net\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-cke-saved-href=\"mailto:ccrilly@nhvweb.net\" rel=\"nofollow\" >ccrilly@nhvweb.net<\/a> for North Hunterdon and Mr. Raimondo (<a href=\"mailto:mraimondo@nhvweb.net\" target=\"_blank\"  rel=\"nofollow\" >mraimondo@nhvweb.net<\/a>) or Ms. Betsill (<a href=\"mailto:mbetsill@nhvweb.net\" target=\"_blank\"  rel=\"nofollow\" >mbetsill@nhvweb.net<\/a>) at Voorhees.\u00a0 Internet hot spots are also available for students who do not have internet access, please also contact the technician above if that applies to your student.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>Who should be contacted if a student needs academic or emotional\u00a0support?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>This school closure and shift to virtual instruction is major life change for our students.\u00a0 If any student is having a difficult time academically or emotionally adapting to this change, please do not hesitate in contacting the\u00a0guidance department.\u00a0 Guidance Counselors are available to assist students and parents during this closure through both online interactions or phone conferences.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>Who else is available for assistance from the school during the closure?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0North Hunterdon and Voorhees administrative teams are\u00a0working in full capacity during this closure.\u00a0 Feel free to contact the appropriate administrator\u00a0for assistance with any needs during this closure.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Thank you for your anticipated\u00a0support as we partner together to make continued educational progress during this closure.\u00a0 You can expect frequent communication from me throughout the closure to provide additional information.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The following message answers some of the common questions we have been receiving from parents and students.
