North Hunterdon Food Pantry

Posted: June 11, 2021 | Entry Type: Post

The North Hunterdon Food Pantry was established in 1991 in an effort to address the problem of distributing food to needy persons in the North Hunterdon area.

In response to its call to serve and provide for the needs of others in the community and the world, the Spruce Run Lutheran Church family is the sponsoring organization for the North Hunterdon Food Pantry, a non-profit organization staffed by volunteers. The pantry serves over 75 clients and regularly distributes to 30-40 family units per month. The family units consist of single individuals, families, single mothers, and senior citizens. Through this program, we happily provide nourishing food for their tables. The pantry was relocated to the grounds of the former Hagedorn facility in September 2015.

As a special offering during the month of November, the good people of Spruce Run Lutheran gather food for Thanksgiving and Christmas. In addition, food and monetary gifts are provided by our own LYO, Vacation Bible School, Sunday School, Spruce Run Women of the ELCA, and Spruce Run’s Tuesday Quilters. We have tremendous support from outside the congregation is provided by our local schools, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, the North Hunterdon Rotary, other area churches, Church World Service (Crop Walk), and Wakefern Food Corporation (Shoprite), Johanna Foods (yogurt), Thrivent, and many individuals.

Through our North Hunterdon Food Pantry program, we have participated in the North Hunterdon High School’s annual Service Day, and in Clinton Shoprite’s Volunteer Day where we packed groceries.

This program is supported by a group of hard-working volunteers, including some high school students who unload the NORWESCAP truck each month, sort all the food items we buy and receive, help our clients pack their grocery bags, and load their cars, and restock our pantry. We are thankful for our blessings. No one should go hungry. We are always happy to have volunteers.
