{"id":79,"date":"2017-08-15T08:42:40","date_gmt":"2017-08-15T12:42:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nhvweb.net\/nhhs\/attendance\/?page_id=79"},"modified":"2025-07-28T11:04:53","modified_gmt":"2025-07-28T15:04:53","slug":"truancy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.nhvweb.net\/nhhs\/attendance\/truancy\/","title":{"rendered":"Truancy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An unexcused absence \u201cthat counts toward truancy\u201d is a student\u2019s absence from school for a full or a portion of a day for any reason that is not an \u201cexcused absence\u201d (see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhvweb.net\/nhhs\/attendance\/absences\/\">Absences<\/a>).\u00a0 Truancy results when a student:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>is present in the building without properly signing in, or<\/li>\n<li>is away from school for reasons other than those listed as excused by the Board of Education.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A student is considered truant if he\/she has accumulated ten (10) or more unexcused absences. Unexcused tardiness may constitute an unexcused absence that counts toward truancy (see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhvweb.net\/nhhs\/attendance\/lateness\/\">Lateness<\/a>).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Consequences and Interventions for Unexcused Absences\/Truancy:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Up to four (4) unexcused absences<\/b>: The school will attempt to notify parents, determine the cause, and identify actions to address the pattern of absences.<\/li>\n<li><b>Five to nine (5-9) unexcused absences<\/b>\u00a0(specifically seven (7) or more in regulation): The school will continue to notify parents, evaluate prior actions, and\u00a0<b>develop an Amnesty-Action plan<\/b>. This plan may involve referrals to intervention teams, assessments, alternative placements, community resources, or even\u00a0<b>court referral<\/b>\u00a0for violations of compulsory education law or evidence of a juvenile-family crisis.<\/li>\n<li><b>Ten (10) or more cumulative unexcused absences<\/b>: The student (ages 6-16) is considered\u00a0<b>truant<\/b>. The district will determine the need for a court referral, continue to consult with parents, and cooperate with law enforcement. Parents may face fines (up to $25 for first offense, $100 for subsequent offenses) and court appearances.
