When students are consistently in class, they learn more, build stronger connections with their teachers and peers, and are better prepared for their future. Think of these like “sick days” you might have at work. If your child is sick, we understand they need to stay home. However, it is crucial to understand that these absences still contribute to your child’s overall attendance record for state reporting on chronic absenteeism and locally for loss of credit. The good news is that your student is allowed eight (8) unexcused absences in a semester course and sixteen (16) unexcused absences in a year-long course before they lose credit. We want your child in school as much as possible, but this new policy does allow for these allotted “sick days” (unexcused absences) for illness and doctor visits.

How Many Absences Are Allowed?

Chronic Absenteeism: A student is considered “chronically absent” if they miss 10% or more of their enrolled school days for any reason other than a state-excused absence (this includes locally-excused and unexcused absences).
