{"id":1018,"date":"2019-07-02T13:12:46","date_gmt":"2019-07-02T13:12:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nhvweb.net\/nhhs\/athletics\/parentstudenthandbook\/?page_id=1018"},"modified":"2019-07-02T13:12:46","modified_gmt":"2019-07-02T13:12:46","slug":"nhv-homework-guide","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.nhvweb.net\/nhhs\/athletics\/parentstudenthandbook\/nhv-homework-guide\/","title":{"rendered":"NHV Homework Guide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>North Hunterdon-Voorhees Regional High School District Homework Guide<\/b><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><b>Guiding Principles<\/b><\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Carefully planned homework can complement classroom learning.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Well-designed homework strengthens students\u2019 academic skills.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is important to respect a balance between schoolwork and family life.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The physical and mental health of our students is important.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><b>Homework Definition<\/b><\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Homework is any task assigned by teachers to be completed outside the classroom.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><b>Homework Purposes\/Types of Homework<\/b><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Five purposes of homework are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Prelearning\/preparation (\u201cto discover what students already know about a topic or what they are interested in learning about\u201d or \u201cto stimulate interest in a concept\u201d (Vatterott 104); reading; flipped classroom);<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Diagnosis (\u201c[provides] information that enables the teacher to make decisions about next steps\u2026 once teachers know where students are in their skills or knowledge, they can plan instruction more efficiently\u201d (Vatterott 104-105));<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Checking for understanding (examples include: \u201cJournal questions about a science experiment may ask the student to explain what happened and why. Asking students to identify literary devices in a short story shows the teacher whether the student understands literary devices. Asking students to do a few sample problems in math and to explain the steps lets the teacher know if the student understands how to do the problem\u201d (Vatterott 106));<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Practice\/extension (\u201cstudents should practice [something] only after the teacher has adequately checked for understanding\u201d and \u201cpractice is more effective when distributed over several days\u201d (Vatterott 106)); and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Processing (\u201cused when we want<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">students to reflect on concepts that were discussed in class, think of new questions to ask, apply skills or knowledge learned, synthesize information, or show that they see the big picture. Processing homework is often a long-term project, such as showing relationships between major concepts in a unit, writing an original poem, or applying a number of math concepts to the design of a golf course\u201d (Vatterott 107)).<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><b>Effective Homework Tasks<\/b><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Effective homework:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Has a clear purpose;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Is connected to learning goals;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Is developmentally appropriate (provides necessary scaffolding, is of student-level-appropriate difficulty); and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Is differentiated to accommodate learner needs.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><b>Homework Feedback<\/b><\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Effective feedback is goal-referenced, tangible and transparent, actionable, user-friendly, timely, ongoing, and consistent (from Grant Wiggins\u2019 <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ascd.org\/publications\/educational-leadership\/sept12\/vol70\/num01\/Seven-Keys-to-Effective-Feedback.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cSeven Keys to Effective Feedback\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">); and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Homework should provide feedback to the teacher and student about student understanding and progress.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><b>Amount of Homework Assigned<\/b><\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There is no requirement for teachers to give homework on a regular basis;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When assigning homework, be mindful of students\u2019 after-school activities and commitments, including homework in other classes; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When possible and appropriate, provide students with advance notice, or give them a window of time before the due date, so they can manage their workload.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><b>Homework Gradebook Weighting<\/b><\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students\u2019 marking period grades should accurately reflect their mastery of the standards for the course;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Homework completion (or lack thereof) should not significantly impact a student\u2019s grade; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A student who has been absent from school will be given an opportunity to make up homework assignments, provided the assignments are completed during a period equal to the length of his or her absence. That period may be extended for the completion of long-term assignments.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><b>No Homework Days<\/b><\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The district will establish and send out No Homework Days at the start of the school year.
