\nNational Take-Back Day Provides Venues for Safely <\/b><\/em>Disposing of Unused and Unwanted Prescription Drugs<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n

In a continuing effort to help residents keep their homes and families safe from unwanted and unused prescription drugs, the Safe Communities Coalition of Hunterdon and Somerset County is urging residents to participate in the DEA National Take-Back<\/strong> Day<\/strong> on Saturday, October 26, 2013 <\/strong>from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Residents are urged to take this opportunity to safely dispose of accumulated expired, unwanted or unused prescription drugs and medications, and educate their families at the same time.\u00a0 The service is free, anonymous and part of the positive national trend to get drugs off the street!\u00a0<\/p>\n

Results from a recent national study indicated that 70% of the people who reported using prescription drugs for non-medical use within the past year obtained them from a home medicine cabinet, friend or relative.\u00a0 In recent youth focus groups in Hunterdon and Somerset Counties, nearly half (46%) of participants reported that the easiest place to access prescription drugs is from their medicine cabinet at home. Research has also indicated that the majority of young adults who are heroin users started their substance abuse with prescription drugs.\u00a0 By participating in the National Take-Back Day, you can keep your home safe for you and your loved-ones.<\/p>\n

In the five previous Take-Back Day events, the DEA, in conjunction with our state and local law enforcement partners, collected more than 2 million pounds (1,018 tons) of prescription medications, thereby removing these medications from circulation.<\/p>\n

The Safe Communities Coalition<\/strong> of Hunterdon and Somerset County and its fiscal agent, Hunterdon Prevention Resources<\/strong>, are encouraging residents to properly dispose of their expired or unused medications by bringing them to one of the designated sites listed below:<\/p>\n
