{"id":1350,"date":"2011-10-17T22:57:25","date_gmt":"2011-10-18T02:57:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nhvweb.net\/?page_id=1350"},"modified":"2013-02-20T16:01:17","modified_gmt":"2013-02-20T21:01:17","slug":"news-of-the-month","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.nhvweb.net\/index.php\/news-of-the-month\/","title":{"rendered":"News of the Month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thank you for visiting!\u00a0 Each month, new facts about district, student or staff achievements along with events and ge<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhvweb.net\/?attachment_id=1504\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1504\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nhvweb.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/big-news-clipart.jpg\" width=\"140\" height=\"176\" \/><\/a>neral news will be posted to this webpage.\u00a0 We encourage you to check back each month to find out more information about our district.\u00a0 Please share the link to this page with your friends, family and neighbors.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;text-decoration: underline\"><em><strong>MARCH 2013<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>North Hunterdon&#8217;s Chamber Choir and Madrigal Singers will perform in a joint choral concert with the choirs from Lebanon Valley College on March 22.\u00a0 The concert will take place in the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church in Pittstown, NJ, beginning at 7:00pm.\u00a0 Admission is free, but seating is limited so please reserve a seat by emailing <a href=\"mailto:kmeo@nhvweb.net\">kmeo@nhvweb.net<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #000080\"><em><strong>FEBRUARY 2013<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The high school district has launched email accounts for all of its students.\u00a0 The email account is linked to Google Apps for Education.\u00a0 This was a goal in the district&#8217;s three-year technology plan.\u00a0 Providing a district-issued email account to each student is part of the district&#8217;s efforts to foster a 21st century learning environment.<\/li>\n<li>Voorhees has launched an online registration program for spring sports registration.\u00a0 The program is being piloted for the spring and if successful will be launched for all sports next school year.<\/li>\n<li>North Hunterdon&#8217;s winter musical, <em><strong>Once Upon a Mattress<\/strong><\/em>, will be performed on February 28, March 1 and March 2, all at 7:00pm in the high school&#8217;s theater.\u00a0 Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and senior citizens.\u00a0 Tickets will be sold at the door 45 minutes before curtain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em><strong>JANUARY<\/strong><\/em><\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em><strong> 2<\/strong><\/em><\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em><strong>013<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Spirit Week will take place at the high schools from January 3rd to 9th leading up to the North vs. Voorhees wrestling match on January 9.\u00a0 Spirit Week was postponed due to Hurricane Sandy.<\/li>\n<li>Board of Education reorganized on January 3rd, welcoming three new Board members: Megan Lehman-Wranitz, John Melick and William Sauder.\u00a0 The updated list of Board members is available by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhvweb.net\/index.php\/boe-district-services\/boe-directory\/\">clicking here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The Voorhees High School Mock Trial team won the county finals on January 23.\u00a0 The team went on to complete in the regional finals on February 7.\u00a0 Congratulations to the Mock Trial Team for their 1st place finish in the county!<\/li>\n<li>Three students, Emily Chen and Mark Sun from North Hunterdon High School and Jason Farrell from Voorhees High School, were invited to apply to the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program.\u00a0 This prestigious program recognizes and honors some of the nation&#8217;s most distinguished graduating high school seniors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;text-decoration: underline\"><em><strong>DECEMBER 2012<\/strong><\/em><\/span><em><strong> &#8211; <span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><em><strong>Happy Holidays!<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Winter Concerts are being held at both high schools to help get you in the holiday spirit!\u00a0 Concerts at NHHS will be on December 6 and 13 at 7:00pm in the theater, and at Voorhees on December 12 at 7:00pm in the theater.<\/li>\n<li>Congratulations to Elizabeth Maszczak from Voorhees High School and Meghna Mendu from North Hunterdon High School for being selected to perform in the 2013 NA<em>f<\/em>ME All-Eastern Honors Ensembles!\u00a0 Elizabeth will perform with the All-Eastern\u00a0Honors Mixed Choir as Alto 1, and Meghna will perform\u00a0with the All-Eastern Women\u2019s Choir as Soprano 1.\u00a0 Performances will be in Hartford, CT on April 7, 2013.<\/li>\n<li>The school district will be closed December 24 through January 1, 2013 for Winter Recess.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;text-decoration: underline\"><em><strong>NOVEMBER 2012<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Power outages and impassable roadways following Hurricane Sandy forced us to close school for six days for North Hunterdon and seven for Voorhees.\u00a0 On November 20, the Board of Education voted to extend the school year by one week and forgive two days for students to alleviate make up days.\u00a0 A revised calendar will be posted online following the Board&#8217;s approval of the revised calendar at its December meeting.<\/li>\n<li>Congratulations to the Voorhees Varsity Football team which made the first round of the state playoffs, for the first time since 2003!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;text-decoration: underline\"><em><strong>OCTOBER 2012<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The high schools recognized the Week of Respect, the first week of October.\u00a0 The Week of Respect was instituted with the Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act.\u00a0 Each department worked in the importance and value of respect into the curriculum for the week or had students work on projects.<\/li>\n<li>Twenty-seven students from North Hunterdon and Voorhees High Schools were recognized as Commended Students in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program.\u00a0 Three students from North Hunterdon were selected as Semi-Finalists.\u00a0 If Semi-Finalists are selected as Finalists, they will receive a $2,500 scholarship.\u00a0 The program selects students based on their 2011 PSAT scores.<\/li>\n<li>The 2013-2014 calendar has been approved by the Board of Education. underline\"><em><strong>SEPTEMBER 2012<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Voorhees Education Foundation is up and running.\u00a0 The foundation is a 501c3 organization and is a separate entity from the high school district.\u00a0 The foundation&#8217;s mission is to raise money to support Voorhees High School.\u00a0 The foundation is looking for more volunteers.\u00a0 Please <a department websites for game schedules.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #333399;text-decoration: underline\"><strong>AUGUST 2012<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Freshmen Orientation will be on August 22 beginning at 9:45AM.<\/li>\n<li>School opens for all students on Thursday, August 23.<\/li>\n<li>The roof replacement at North Hunterdon High School is behind schedule because of weather delays.\u00a0 North Hunterdon High School will be closed for a half day on August 23 and 24 so that the tarring process can\u00a0progress while students are not in the building.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #333399;text-decoration: underline\">JULY 2012<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Facility upgrades and preparations for the new school year have begun.\u00a0 Honeywell is finishing up its implementation of Energy Conservation Measures at both high schools that were outlined in the district&#8217;s Energy Savings Plan.\u00a0 Upgrades to existing building maintenance systems and replacements of units associated with heating, cooling and ventilation will result in energy savings, and more importantly, cost savings over time.<\/li>\n<li>The roof replacement project at North Hunterdon High School has begun.\u00a0 This project is expected to be completed before school opens.\u00a0 This is the last section of roof that needed to\u00a0be replaced.<\/li>\n<li>A replacement of the generator at Voorhees High School is expected to be done prior to the opening of school.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #333399;text-decoration: underline\"><strong>JUNE 2012<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Graduation for both high schools was held on June 8, 2012.\u00a0 The district graduated 430 students from North Hunterdon High School and 261 from Voorhees High School.\u00a0 Congratulations to our graduates and good luck with all your future endeavors!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #000080\"><em><strong>MAY 2012<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Eight students from North Hunterdon and five students from Voorhees were selected to be a part of the All-State Mixed Choir or Women\u2019s Choir.\u00a0 Over 1,000 students auditioned for the choirs.\u00a0 Congratulations to Heather Birmingham, Cayla Mabie, Meghna Mendu, Andrew Vitovitch, Louise Gallagher, Elizabeth Maszczak and Brandon Simanski for making the All-State Mixed Choir, and to Sarah Barrett, Victoria Barton, Morgan Evans, Riley Zalewski, Christina Dornbusch and Brigitt Francis for making the All-State Women\u2019s Choir!<\/li>\n<li>Congratulations to Voorhees Social Studies Teacher Jennifer O\u2019Steen, and to North Hunterdon Music Teacher Perry Andrews, for being selected as the 2012 Teacher of the Year for their respective schools!\u00a0 They will be recognized at a county luncheon on June 1<sup>st<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<li>May is a busy month for exams.\u00a0 Both high schools are administering Advanced Placement exams throughout the month.\u00a0 Students who score well on these exams can earn college credit.\u00a0 On May 15 and 16, the high schools will also administer the state-mandated Biology Competency Test to any student enrolled in biology.<\/li>\n<li>The district held tabletop security drills on May 4 with its emergency management teams.\u00a0 The drills were facilitated by Brayden Fahey, County Coordinator for the Office of Emergency Management, and Detective Sergeant Kevin Burd from the Hunterdon County Prosecutor\u2019s Office. \u00a0Local police, fire and rescue units were invited to attend.<\/li>\n<li>Graduation will be held on Friday, June 8 with the Voorhees ceremony beginning at 5:00pm and the North Hunterdon ceremony beginnning at 7:00pm.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #000080\"><em><strong>APRIL 2012<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The New Jersey Department of Education has included both North Hunterdon and Voorhees High Schools on its list of the Highest Performing schools in the state!\u00a0 This list was part of the DOE\u2019s waiver application for No Child Left Behind.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.state.nj.us\/education\/news\/2012\/0411rac.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Click here for the full press release and list<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>For the first time in a long time, the choirs of North Hunterdon and Voorhees High Schools will perform together, along with choirs from East Brunswick High School and Warren Hills High School, on Friday, April 27 at the Princeton University Chapel.\u00a0 Admission is a donation of your choosing.\u00a0 Concert begins at 7:30pm.<\/li>\n<li>There are 9 open seats on the Board of Education for next year.\u00a0 <a clerk\u2019s office by 4pm on June 5, 2012.<\/li>\n<li>Our students continue to help the greater community:\u00a0 North Hunterdon\u2019s Hoops for Heart event on March 16 raised $20,000 for the American Heart Association, and the Voorhees Wrestling Team raised $6,100 through its \u201cPinning 4 a Purpose\u201d fundraiser for the Hunterdon County Special Olympics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #000080\"><em><strong>MARCH 2012<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0The New Jersey Department of Education has awarded a $100,000 grant to our special education program.\u00a0 The NJDOE awarded only 12 districts state-wide with grants for demonstrating \u201cboth high growth and proficiency with their special education student population\u201d during the 2010-2011 school year.\u00a0 We congratulate the hard work and efforts of our special education staff members at both North Hunterdon and Voorhees!<\/li>\n<li>Mark Spring Concert I-May 9; Spring Concert II-May 16<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The Voorhees High School Mock Trial Team and the Consumer Bowl Team both took first place in their county competitions!<\/li>\n<li>North Hunterdon High School has been selected to participate in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) on March 1, 2012. The Nation\u2019s Report Card includes the results of NAEP.\u00a0 Tests are given to assess student achievement in major subject areas across the nation at grades 4, 8 and 12.\u00a0 North Hunterdon is one of 30 NJ high schools chosen to participate, and approximately 42 North Hunterdon seniors have been randomly selected to take the test.\u00a0 These seniors will take an assessment in economics, mathematics and reading.\u00a0 Results are anonymous, but they will be combined with the scores of other students to produce a report card for the nation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #000080\"><em><strong>FEBRUARY 2012<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Winter and Spring Musicals are coming soon at both high schools.\u00a0 North Hunterdon\u2019s Theater Organization will be performing Gypsy on March 1, 2 and 3.\u00a0 Click here for ticket information.\u00a0 Voorhees\u2019 Drama Club will be performing How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying on March 29, 30, 31 and April 1. Click here for ticket information.<\/li>\n<li>Because of the population shifts shown in the 2010 Census, our regional Board of Education has to be re-apportioned as\u00a0Board seats and each member\u2019s weighted vote are\u00a0determined in large part by population.\u00a0 Through reapportionment, the Board of Education will\u00a0be reduced from 13 seats to 12.\u00a0 Changes to\u00a0several seats (either from an elimination or addition of\u00a0a seat for a municipality)\u00a0will mean those seats\u00a0must be\u00a0open for the next election. (The new configuration of the Board of Education will be in effect at the\u00a0reorganization meeting on January 3, 2013.)\u00a0 Click here for a list of seats that will be up for election in November 2012.<\/li>\n<li>The Jennie M. Haver Memorial Scholarship Fund will be hosting its annual All-County Musical Revue on March 16 at 7pm at Hunterdon Central High School.\u00a0 Each high school in Hunterdon County sends a musical group to perform at the Revue.\u00a0 North Hunterdon\u2019s Show Choir and Voorhees\u2019 Madrigal Singers will be performing.\u00a0 Tickets are $10 or three for $25.\u00a0 Advanced tickets can be purchased by emailing Amy Mullay at <a href=\"mailto:amullay@nhvweb.net\">amullay@nhvweb.net<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>High schools will be administering the NJ High School Proficiency Assessment to all juniors on March 6, 7 and 8.\u00a0 This state mandated test is required for graduation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #000080\"><em><strong>JANUARY 2012<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Per a new state law, all Board of Education members in New Jersey must be fingerprinted for criminal background checks.\u00a0 All of our NH-V Board members have been fingerprinted and approved by the state to serve on the Board of Education.\u00a0 Any new member to the Board in the future will have to complete this process.<\/li>\n<li>8th Grade Orientations are being held in January for students and parents.\u00a0 Current 8th grade students will meet with the high school guidance counselors to prepare their schedule for their freshman year.<\/li>\n<li>Scheduling is also taking place this month for current high school students for the 2012-2013 school year.<\/li>\n<li>North Hunterdon High School is hosting a Community Service Fair on January 27, 2012.\u00a0 Local organizations offering community service opportunities are welcome to attend the fair to present information to students.\u00a0 Please contact Amy Dalgewicz for details (<a href=\"mailto:adalgewicz@nhvweb.net\">adalgewicz@nhvweb.net<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Voorhees High School&#8217;s WHAM team captured first place in the Warren-Hunterdon Academic Meet held on December 6 &#8211; Congratulations to the team!<\/li>\n<li>Voorhees High School and its Athletic Department were awarded the NJSIAA Sportsmanship Banner for the Skyland Conference Raritan Division in October 2011. Milkcan Football Game will be held on Friday, November 18th at 7PM at Voorhees High School.\u00a0 North Hunterdon and Voorhees&#8217; football teams have been facing off at the end of each season to win the coveted gold milkcan.\u00a0 Please join us for the game if you are free!\u00a0<em><strong> [Congratulations to Voorhees for winning the MilkCan Game!]<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li>In the National Merit Scholarship 2012 Competition, two seniors were named as Semi-Finalists and 26 students were named as Commended Students.\u00a0 Students were selected based on the scores of their PSAT exam in 2010.\u00a0 Please <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhvweb.net\/index.php\/2011\/11\/national-merit-scholarship-competition\/\" target=\"_blank\">click here for more information<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Strategic Planning update\u2013 the district is in the final stages of its strategic planning process.\u00a0 Four main goals have been established and 3-5 strategies have been developed for each goal.\u00a0 Committees are currently meeting to create action plans on how to put each strategy into motion.\u00a0 The final strategic planning report will be presented to the Board of Education for approval at its February 7<sup>th<\/sup> meeting.\u00a0 The report will be made available on the district\u2019s website for the public at that time.<\/li>\n<li>NH-V District now has a dedicated autism program, housed at Voorhees High School.\u00a0 The District\u2019s autism program affords individuals the opportunity to receive an appropriate education in the least restrictive environment of their home district.\u00a0 This program streamlines students\u2019 experiences to access the high school\u2019s many varied curriculum options and extra-curricular activities.\u00a0 Students interact with non-disabled peers on a daily basis through integration in classes and peer buddy interventions.\u00a0 Students are also afforded the opportunity to practice daily living and vocational training skills in their home community.\u00a0 Beyond the most positive student-centered educational benefits, the operation of this program results in fiscal savings to the district of approximately $40,000 per student.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><span style=\"color: #333399;text-decoration: underline\"><strong><em>OCTOBER 2011<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Average SAT scores increased or remained the same for 2010-2011 vs. the previous year, and more students took the test in 2010-2011 than in 2009-2010 (see Hunterdon County Democrat article: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nj.com\/hunterdon-county-democrat\/index.ssf\/2011\/10\/sat_scores_in_hunterdon_county.html\">http:\/\/www.nj.com\/hunterdon-county-democrat\/index.ssf\/2011\/10\/sat_scores_in_hunterdon_county.html<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Implementation of energy conservation measures has begun, which are outlined in the energy savings plan developed by Honeywell.\u00a0 The plan was approved by the Board of Education in July 2010.\u00a0 Temporary trailers have been placed at both high schools for the next several months.\u00a0 We appreciate your patience during the implementation process.<\/li>\n<li>Board of Education Goals for 2011-2012 School Year are:\n<ul>\n<li>To develop and implement a more active voice, with a unified message on issues facing the district, to the constituent communities and municipalities.<\/li>\n<li>To complete strategic planning and use it as a foundation for future goal planning<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Two new Board members have been appointed to the Board of Education to fill vacant seats\u00a0due to\u00a0resignations.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Colleen Ingram\u00a0was chosen for the High Bridge\/Lebanon Township seat, and\u00a0Marc Strauss\u00a0was appointed to the Clinton Township\/Lebanon Borough seat.\u00a0 Welcome and congratulations to Colleen and Marc!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #333399;text-decoration: district-wide.<\/li>\n<li>District Goals for the 2011-2012 School Year are:\n<ul>\n<li>By June 2012, all curriculums will be aligned to the new State Core Content Standards.<\/li>\n<li>By June 2012, all school and district procedures will be reviewed and revised to increase efficiency using technology resources.<\/li>\n<li>By June 2013, students\u2019 SAT scores will improve by 5 points and the
