CONCERT BAND

Grading Policies

Concert band meets daily for 40 minutes.
You will need your instrument everyday starting August 29, 2011.

GRADES:

Concert Band grades will be determined based on the following grading areas:

1.    CLASS PARTICIPATION AND REHEARSAL TECHNIQUE:

GRADES PER MARKING PERIOD: 4-5

You will receive a grade in this area typically once every two weeks.  The grade will be based on your participation in rehearsal.  Your grade can be affected by the following:

            - no instrument for rehearsal

            - no music

            - gum, drink, or food during rehearsal (THESE ARE NOT ALLOWED)

            - late to rehearsal

            - incorrectly storing music, instrument, and/or equipment

            - no pencil

2.    TESTING:

GRADES PER MARKING PERIOD: 2-4

Testing may include written tests, sectional performance testing, or individual

performance testing.

3.    PERFORMANCE PARTICIPATION:

GRADES PER MARKING PERIOD: 0-4

Concert Band is a performance class.  Attendance at a concert in which the band

performs is mandatory.  The only legitimate excuses are illness or a death in the family.   Absences of this nature must be excused with a note from a parent addressed and delivered to the instructor personally, and preferably prior to the concert.  Unexcused absences are not tolerated.  You will receive two grades for each performance.  The following grades can be received for your performance participation grading area:

            - attended concert 100% (A)

            - failed to attend concert 0% (F)

These are the tentative dates for performances this year, please discuss them with your parents and get them in your calendars ASAP:

            Winter Concert – December 14, 2011
            Mid-Winter Concert – February 29 or March 2, 2012 (TBA)

            Spring Concert –  May 9, 2012

Califon Memorial Day Celebration – May 28, 2012 (TBA)

            Graduation – June 8, 2012

Please note that there may be additional performances.  We would never schedule a concert without trying to give at least a month notice.

Concert attire will be the same as last year: black tuxedo for guys and a floor length black dress for girls.  We will discuss this more when uniform order forms are distributed in the next two weeks.

4.  SECTIONALS:

            GRADES PER MARKING PERIOD: 2-4

Sectionals will be from time to time during the marking period.  Sectionals will be run during the band period.  You will be graded on the amount of time that your section is working during this rehearsal period and/or what you get accomplished.
