US History I is the first half of a two-year sequence, which constitutes the central core component of the History/Social Studies program in the high school. This is a general course in American History. Students build on their past knowledge of American History by exploring topics in more detail and with greater depth of understanding. The two year required survey follows a flexible chronology which broadly covers the panorama of our nation's development over a period of three centuries from discovery and exploration to the view of the United States as a world power. Social, cultural, geographic, and economic themes and conflicts are stressed throughout the course as students survey domestic and foreign policy issues. By the end of the course, students will be able to comprehend basic concepts and themes in American History. Additionally, a strong emphasis will be placed on improving student's basic social studies skills.
