Dear Parents,
If you’re a Stephen King fan, as I am, you may have read the Mercedes Man series in which the evil protagonist develops an internet-based “game” for kids which encourages them to engage in increasingly dangerous activities ultimately culminating in suicide. Lest you think this just a fictional fantasy created by our most notable horror genre author, it may have been more eerily prescient than you might think. The information below came to me from the Maureen A. Brogan, the Program Manager of the Traumatic Loss Coalitions for Youth (TLC). It is important to the wellbeing of the children in our lives that we understand their world.
“Recently the TLC has received inquiries from schools, providers and concerned parents about the “MoMo Challenge”. The game requires players to complete escalating tasks that are usually dangerous and involve self-harm. But, given the challenge’s mysterious origins and the unreliability of news reports linking it to actual harm, some question whether it’s simply another one of the many hoaxes that breed on the Internet.” I have found the following two articles which assert that this is simply a hoax:

https://www.vox.com/2019/3/3/18248783/momo-challenge-hoax-explained
“Hoax or not, it’s still alarming and upsetting, and we want to be sure we are not promoting these troubling things on our social channels or in the media – and instead talking proactively about how we can support young people with positive, helpful conversation and resources. parents-should-know/

We wanted to keep you informed to educate parents about the importance of monitoring your child’s use of social media and the importance of connectedness to a trusted adult.

SAFETY FACTOID:
Texting and driving is now the leading cause
of fatal automobile crashes for 16-24 year
olds.
