Hunterdon Prevention Resources and the Safe Communities Coalition have produced the short documentary entitled “Pills to Heroin, the Domino Effect”.  I urge you to watch it. It’s only fifteen minutes and is well worth the investment in time. The link follows:

Dear NHV Parents,

The show “13 Reasons Why” that was on Netflix caused concerns among parents around the state. The production was extremely graphic and controversial. Various entities have issued reactions and talking points for parents that we would like to share with you.

As you may know, the North Hunterdon-Voorhees District is firmly committed to the active prevention of teen suicide. Since 2009 we have been deeply committed to the use of the Hazelden Foundation’s Lifelines Teen Suicide Prevention curriculum, and have maintained a close relationship with the Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide (see http://www.sptsusa.org/). In this regard, this show may have presented an opportunity for many of you to initiate a meaningful conversation with your children about suicide. It should be noted here that the evidence is clear and convincing that talking about suicide does not cause it! We hope you take this opportunity to partner with us to prevent teen suicide in our community.

Below are links that will give you an idea of the what the show is about, but most importantly the highlighted area is a set of talking points developed by SAVE (Suicide Awareness Voices of Education). This may be a helpful resource for parents and school staff.

Talking Points for New Netflix Series, 13 Reasons Why

Suicide Awareness Voices of Education (SAVE) has released a set of talking points to address suicide-related content in the new Netflix series, 13 Reasons Why, which is based on a fictional novel by the same name. SAVE developed the talking points in partnership with the Jed Foundation to help parents, teachers, and other gatekeepers talk with youth about suicide as it relates to the situational drama that unfolds in the series.
