Emergency School Closing Process

In the case of actual or predicted inclement weather, the decision to close school, delay an opening or dismiss early is made after the Superintendent confers with various area superintendents, county road officials, police departments and District transportation and maintenance departments, in addition to several weather services.  Any change to the normal schedule due to inclement weather will be communicated to parents and staff via the methods listed below.

  • If school is cancelled:

    • A decision will usually be made by 5:30 a.m.

    • If weather improves, a decision to allow afternoon and evening athletic, activity and outside rental groups to use the facility will be made on a case by case basis.  To check the status of athletic events for the day, please visit the athletic department's webpage on the individual school's website for the most up-to-date information.  Outside groups renting facilities should check with their direct school representative.  School representatives will also contact individual groups involved.  Activity cancellation information may be posted on individual school's website.

  • If school is delayed:

    • A decision will usually be made by 5:30 a.m.

    • School will begin two hours later at 9:45 a.m.

    • All bus routes will be delayed exactly 2 hours from their original pick-up times.

    • The decision is based upon safe traveling conditions predicted for later in the morning.

  • If school is dismissed early:

    • Students will usually be dismissed at 11:55 a.m., if weather conditions call for an early dismissal.

    • The decision will usually be made by 10:45 a.m.

    • Please note: when schools are dismissed early, all afternoon, evening and athletic activities are cancelled.

  • The Superintendent contacts our 11 sending district superintendents to inform them of our decision, as well as various area superintendents and the County Superintendent of Schools.

Communicating School Closures, Delayed Openings or Early Dismissals

The high school district uses an automated notification system called School Messenger to contact parents and staff members in the event of an emergency or if the school day schedule will be changed, such as a school closure due to snow.  School Messenger contacts the phone numbers listed in our system for each student's family and our staff members, sends an email to parents, and can also send a text message.

In addition to School Messenger, parents and the community can utilize the following resources to find out if school has been cancelled, delayed or will be dismissed early.  These resources will have the district's message on cancellations or delayed openings by 6:00a.m. or in the case of an early dismissal, as soon as possible.
