About Our Athletic Programs

The athletic programs at North Hunterdon and Voorhees High Schools have a highly successful reputation with teams capturing championships on the conference, sectional and state levels each year.  Students can participate in 17 different sports at North and 16 at Voorhees throughout their high school years.

During the 2007-2008 school year, over 70% of our students were involved in athletics.  It was another year full of team and individual achievements, some of which are listed below:

TEAM ACHIEVEMENTS

North Hunterdon:

·         Boys Soccer team advanced to the NJSIAA semifinals (North 2, Group 4) and won the Hunterdon-Warren County Tournament for a second year in a row.

·         Girls Tennis team won the Hunterdon-Warren Tournament Championship for a 5th year in a row.

·         Girls Volleyball team were the runner-up in the NJSIAA State Finals.

·         Cheerleading squad won the Skyland Conference Delaware West Championship.

·         Boys Fencing foil squad took first place in the District 2 State Competition and the overall team placed second. 

·         Girls Fencing team placed second in the District 2 State Competition and the foil squad also placed second.

Voorhees:

·         Girls Cross Country once again found victory on five levels of competition this year – Hunterdon-Warren County Tournament Champions, Skyland Conference-Delaware West Champions, NJSIAA North II, Group 3 Sectional Champions, and won the State Meet of Champions. The team also set the state record for the fastest time at Holmdel of 19:01.

·         Field Hockey team were Hunterdon-Warren County Tournament Champions and Skyland Conference-Delaware West Conference Champions.

·         Girls Tennis won the Skyland Conference-Raritan West Division Championship.

·         Winter Track team won the Group 2 State Sectional Championship

·         Girls Fencing team took 1st place in the State Competition for District 2.

·         Girls Track team were the Hunterdon-Warren County Relay Champions, Skyland Conference-Delaware Division Champions, Skyland Conference Champions, and North Jersey Section II Group 3 Champions.

·         Girls Lacrosse team won the Skyland Conference-Raritan Division Championship.

 

INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENTS

North Hunterdon:

·         Football

o   New School Records:

Ted Delia - 6 touchdowns in one game, single season record for carries 282, yards rushing in one season 1535, most all purpose yards in one season 1992, most touchdowns rushing in one game 5, four consecutive games of 200+ yards

Kevin Haplea - most sacks in one game, 5.5

·         Boys Soccer

o   Star-Ledger Soccer Player of the Year: Tyler Tompkins

o   Express-Times Soccer Coach of the Year: John Simpson

 

·         Cheerleading

o   NJ Cheerleading & Dance Coaches Association All State Team: Danielle Froschhauser

 

·         Girls Volleyball

o   NJSCA All Star Volleyball Game: Becky Prado and Lacey Chase

o   Star-Ledger Central Jersey Player of the Year: Becky Prado

o   Courier News Girls Volleyball Coach of the Year: Kirk Hissner

 

·         Girls Basketball

o   NJSCA North-South Basketball All Star Team: Emily Tewksbury

 

·         Boys Fencing

o   Brendan Cusack finished in 4th place in foil at the NJSIAA Individuals State Competition

o   Coach John Reid was inducted into the NJSCA Fencing Hall of Fame for 2008 and was named Fencing Coach of the Year.

·         Girls Fencing

o   Alyssa Lomuscio took first place in the District 2 Individual Competition and finished in third place at the NJSIAA Individual Competition.

Voorhees:

·         Girls Cross Country

o   Melanie Thompson - Hunterdon-Warren Champion, Skyland Conference Champion, Sectional Champion, State Group 3 Champion, and All Group Champion. She was also named Star-Ledger Runner of the Year, Courier News Runner of the Year and Express-Times Runner of the Year

o   Katie Spratford was named Star-Ledger West Jersey Runner of the Year.

o   All State 1st Team: Melanie Thompson & Katie Spratford

o   All State 2nd Team: Katie Petruzzellis

o   All State Group 3, 1st Team: Melanie Thompson, Katie Spratford, Katie Petruzzellis

o   All State Group 3, 2nd Team: Colette Whitney

o   All State Group 3, 3rd Team: Christine Curtis

 

·         Field Hockey

o   Tori Symonds - All State Group 3 1st Team, All State All Groups 2nd Team, North Jersey Coaches Association 1st Team, Express-Times Player of the Year and Star-Ledger West Jersey

o   Meaghan Vakierner - North Jersey Coaches Association 2nd Team

o   Colleen Boyce - Top Freshman Star-Ledger West Jersey

o   All State Group 3 2nd Team: Meaghan Vakierner, Erica Hintz

 

·         Girls Fencing

o   State Tournament: Christie Robinson – 1st place District Epee Individual

o   State Tournament: Lauren Bauch - 3rd place District Foil Individual

 

·         Boys Fencing

o   District Individual Competition - Dan Flynn, 3rd place District Epee Individual

o   District Individual Competition - Tony Sorgi, 4tf place District Foil Individual

o   District Individual Competition - Nick DePinto, 4th place District Sabre Individual

 

·         Winter Track

o   Melanie Thompson won the 3200m at the State Meet of Champions, finished in 5th place at the Millrose Games and took 2nd place in the 3000m at the Nike Nationals

o   Alex Mauer took 1st place in high jump at the Skyland Conference and was the Group 2 State Sectional Champion in high jump.

·         Girls Spring Track

o   Melanie Thompson - Skyland Conference 1600m Champion, Skyland Conference 3200m Champion, State Sectionals 1600m Champion, State Sectionals 3200m Champion, State Group 3 1600m Champion, State Group 3 3200m Champion, and State Meet of Champions 3200m Champions.
