The North Hunterdon High School Student Council has raised $7,000 for the Parents of Autistic Children (POAC)! The funds were raised through two main events. The first event was "Stall Day", held in December. During Stall Day, each teacher began class as usual and students brought loose change to the teacher to count throughout the class period. Every time the teacher counted the change, the class was "stalled" and he or she had to restart the class. Students had great fun interrupting their teachers during class all day and all the loose change added up to $1,500! The second event was Mr. North, which was held on Friday, May 1. Mr. North raised $5,500! Senior males sashayed up and down the runway competing in various events. Congratulations to Greg Randazzo who was chosen as Mr. North 2009! And congratulations to runner-up - Billy Loftus, "Mr. Dancing King" - Miguel Tejeda, "Mr. Congeniality" - Derek Longenecker, and "Mr. Legs" - Ryan Mahoney. The New Jersey Association of Student Councils named North Hunterdon High School the 3rd top high school in NJ for their fundraising efforts to benefit POAC, the state charity of the year! Congratulations to the North Student Council for all your hard work! _____________________________________________________________________________________ North Hunterdon English Dept raises over $6,000 to help build schools in Cambodia Through a community service project entitled, Schools Building Schools, the North Hunterdon High School English Department raised $6,066.31 for the American Assistance for Cambodia organization! During Spring Recess (April 10-19), students were encouraged to read books, magazines, newspapers, etc. and gather pledges for every minute of reading they did while out of school. When all the pledges were totaled, the 221 students who participated raised over $6,000, meaning they read a total of 1,840 hours! The highest amount of pledges in one class (Miss Lauren Sheldon's period 5-6 class) earned that class a bagel breakfast. Please check our website for more information on the results: http://www.nhvweb.net/nhhs/mediacenter/schools/. All the money raised goes directly to the American Assistance for Cambodia organization's program called the Rural Schools Project. In rural Cambodia, hundreds of villages still lack a functional primary and secondary school. AAfC's Rural Schools Project, founded in 1999, has led the effort to construct over 300 primary and lower secondary schools - with matching funds from the World Bank and Asian Development Bank - to help promote education in rural Cambodia. After construction, each school is sponsored by a donor to provide value-add improvements to further strengthen student education, such as English/computer teachers, Internet, and access to clean water. It costs $13,000 to build a school in the rural areas of Cambodia, meaning the North Hunterdon students have already raised close to half the money for a new school! More information on the Rural Schools Project can be found at this website: http://www.cambodiaschools.com/. ____________________________________________________________________________________
