Habitat for Humanity

What is Habitat for Humanity?

Habitat for Humanity is an international non-profit organization whose goal it to provide decent, affordable housing to every family worldwide.  The NHHS Habitat for Humanity club works closely with the Raritan Valley chapter of Habitat for Humanity and specifically focuses on Somerset and Hunterdon County, NJ.  The club provides support by being actively involved in the Habitat youth council, by attending area build days and other local habitat events and by fundraising to help support the financial needs of the program.

How can you get involved?

  1. Habitat Youth Council – The North Hunterdon club participates in the Raritan Valley Habitat Youth Council, which coordinates activities for high school youth across Somerset and Hunterdon counties.  Each school sends 2-5 members to Youth Council monthly meetings.  Council members set annual goals for the youth program (fundraising, publicity, etc.), schedule build days for all involved high schools, plan group fundraising events, and help to publicize the program.   Representatives from each school then bring ideas and programs back to their school’s club to pursue.
  2. Site Building– Students ages 16+ are eligible to volunteer to help at a build site.   The build team includes up to 15 members and must include one adult for every four students (12 students/3 adults).   Students may get involved through the club or by serving as a site host.
  3. Area Habitat Events:  The Raritan Valley Habitat for Humanity is a partnership with the Bridgewater Mall and often hosts awareness programs at the mall or in the surrounding vicinity.  Some volunteer opportunities include helping at the Habitat-sponsored Halloween activities at the mall, helping at the Habitat 5K race and the supporting the Habitat booth at the Somerville street festival.
  4. Fundraising– The club provides financial support to Raritan Valley Habitat through various fundraising activities.  Some examples include; bakes sales in the mall, t-shirt sales and “buy a brick”.   New ideas are always welcome.
