Advanced Placement Literature and Composition

Course Objectives:

This course is designed to comply with the curricular requirements described in the AP English Course Description. AP English Literature and Composition involves analysis of literature and the study and practice of writing. Students examine an individual work’s language, characters, action, and thematic content. They consider each work’s structure, meaning, value, and relationship to contemporary and historical experience, and they scrutinize representative works from several genres and concentrate on reading and writing about challenging works of recognized literary merit (AP English Literature and Composition Curriculum Guide, North Hunterdon-Voorhees Regional High School District).

Grades are weighted in the following manner:

  • Literature quizzes, in-class writing, journal writing—30%
  • Homework, participation, reader-response, online discussions, class work—20%
  • Tests, take home essays—50%

* Essay assessment will vary according to length, breadth and extent of assignment. Essays will range in weight from tests to quizzes (40-30%).

Late work will lose 10 points each day late. No exceptions

Welcome to AP English Lit and Comp. I hope our class will help you feel more confident and comfortable writing, reading, and analyzing literature.
