The Casting Directors’ Notes on Casting of NHTO’s Gypsy
In casting any musical, many considerations may not be apparent. Certainly, first and foremost, talent is essential, both vocally and dramatically. Careful preparation for an audition can help a student to reflect that talent clearly. Sometimes, however, casting is largely determined by factors other than ability. Height, general vocal range, age, and “type” are hardly reflections of talent, yet they affect our image on stage. Each person has a presence, a general demeanor, that he or she brings to each role. The failure to receive a desired role may due to these factors.
A students’ experience as a performer is an advantage when auditioning for new shows. Experience fosters improvement in skills. NHTO casting directors strive to cast the best performer for each lead role, regardless of age or grade level. Usually, it happens that older students are naturally better actors and singers, because of maturity as well as experience. Therefore, most lead players are upperclassmen, although it is not terribly unusual for a younger student to be assigned a lead role. If ability between two students vying for the same role is very close, generally, the older student gets the nod.
Finally, in this year’s production, we have used a casting committee of seven faculty members. It may be prudent to note that, due to familial considerations, the director abstained from discussion about roles for which her child was considered.
As you accept your role in the musical, including the roles of a crew member and usher, it is my great wish that you consider yourself part of a wonderful company which continues NHTO’s decades-long tradition of excellent musical theater. We begin now to prepare what has been called the greatest musical of all time. Let’s have a barrel of fun!
