Coach Lori Guida Schuetz was Awarded the Regional National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) National High School Spirit of Sport Award.
In 2008, the National Federation of State High School Associations began its “National High School Spirit of Sport Award” program. Lori is amongst eight regional sectional candidates from which a one national winner be chosen. The recipient must be an individual or team from a high school that is a member of an NFHS-member athletic association. This prestigious award seeks to recognize individuals who exemplify the ideals of the positive spirit of sport that represent the core mission of education-based athletics.
The North Hunterdon High School Athletic Department Competitive Cheerleading Head Coach Lori Guida Schuetz has been named as a 2014 Regional winner of the National High School Spirit of Sport Award by the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA). “The North Hunterdon Athletic Community is proud to learn of Lori’s selection,” said NHHS Athletic Administrator John Deutsch, who nominated Lori for the recognition. “North Hunterdon’s goal is to hire great role models to offer positive learning experiences for our student-athletes. Her main goal as a coach is to effectively develop spirit within the student body and help cheerleaders to master new skills by reaching team and individual goals. She has served our school and hundreds of student-athletes the past eleven years. She is one of the top interscholastic cheerleading coaches in New Jersey and is most deserving of this honor.”
Her teams have won 1 Skyland Conference title, 4 Skyland Divisional titles, 2 UCA Regional titles, an Atlantic Cheer and Dance National Championship, a Contest of Champions National Championship, and have ranked within the Top 10 teams in the USA at the UCA National High School Cheerleading Championships 3 times.
Lori holds the following certifications: AACCA, USAG, ACDC judge certified; Power Consulting Coach and Judge Certified; UCA Bronze Level Coaches and First Aid Defibrillator and CPR. She is a member of the New Jersey Cheer and Dance Coaches Association (NJCDCA) and has been recognized by that organization as one of the top coaches in New Jersey in 2007 and 2009. She has also been awarded the General’s Award from Atlantic Cheer and Dance, winning the National Cheerleading Coach of the Year Award in 2006.
She reconstructed the fall Homecoming event in 2005, starting new traditions that made the event more prestigious and helped develop a significant increase in school spirit.
In 2009, Lori initiated a winter cheer/dance program to include dance-type cheerleaders for basketball games in order to give more students a chance to participate in cheerleading. This created more spirit at North Hunterdon and provided team members with scholarship opportunities.
She was selected by the Skyland Conference to host 9 student leadership seminars for high school cheerleading captains at Raritan Valley Community College, focusing on positive leadership, responsibility, and problem solving issues.
The success of the program has positively influenced the community. In order to bridge a positive relationship with our feeder programs, Lori initiated fall and winter cheer clinics, to provide an opportunity for varsity cheerleaders to develop leadership skills and to provide an opportunity for future potential NHHS cheerleaders to learn important methods of stunting and gymnastics. Lori began hosting two major competitions each year, which has earned NHHS a strong and trustworthy reputation within the regional cheerleading community. Lori encourages her cheerleaders to act as leaders and role models to the feeder program by rewarding them with volunteer hours for their service to the community. Most importantly, it has motivated North’s cheerleaders to be responsible leaders who have learned the value of ‘giving back’ to their community.
Furthermore, Lori has had numerous cheerleaders win New Jersey Cheer and Dance (NJCDCA) scholarships and be recognized as NJCDCA All State cheerleaders. Over 10 girls who have graduated from her program have been awarded with academic cheerleading scholarships and have cheered or danced at the college level. Such colleges include the University of Miami, Penn State University, University of South Carolina, Syracuse University, University of Delaware, Virginia Tech, University of Western Kentucky, Wesley College, Lehigh University and Temple University.
North Hunterdon HS is fortunate to have such a fine coach –Congratulations to Lori!
Congratulations to the following members of the girls swim team for earning 1st team all-conference in the following events: Carmen Kuo, Claire Lee, Maddie Hynoski and Emily Murphy in the 200 Medley Relay and the 200 Freestyle Relay, Claire Lee in the 200 IM, Maddie Hynoski in the 50 Free, Carmen Kuo in the 100 Backstroke, Emily Murphy in the 100 breaststroke, and Claire, Carmen, Maddie and Jess Teipel earned 2nd team all-conference in the 400 freestyle relay. The Dan Hutchins North award winner with the most exciting match of the night was Brian Smolinsky. Brian won a trophy and will receive a scholarship from the Dan Hutchinson Scholarship.
The Daniel R. Hutchins memorial wrestling awards are presented in memory of Dan Hutchins, who unfortunately lost his life in an automobile accident at the near the conclusion of his senior year. Dan was at the time, the winningest wrestler in Del-Val history with over 100 wins and placements at the State Wrestling Tournaments his junior and senior years. He was to attend Rutgers University in the fall of that year, both on academic and wrestling scholarships.
The family, Don, Janine, and twin brother Phil Hutchins decided to present two trophies each year (annually) at the NHRHS vs Delaware Valley HS dual meet, in memory of Dan’s great bouts with North athletes during his four years at Del-Val. The two outstanding wrestler awards (trophies)and scholarships ($500.00) each are selected by the opposing coaches, at the conclusion of each dual meet.
To date, I believe there have been twelve years of presentations since his death in 2002. The funding is from a foundation formed by the family, from which they receive funding from an annual golf outing run for these and other scholarships to Del-Val students.
