On Friday, April 27th, the choirs of North Hunterdon and Voorhees High Schools will join together with the choirs from East Brunswick High School and Warren Hills High School for a choral concert. The concert will begin at 7:30pm in the Princeton University Chapel in Princeton, NJ.

This is the first time in many years that musical groups from North Hunterdon and Voorhees High Schools will perform together in a joint concert. The idea developed through a discussion between the schools’ choir directors, Michael Schmidt from Voorhees and Katie Meo from North Hunterdon. Meo was also approached by the director at Warren Hills regarding a joint choral concert. When the directors attended the All-State Choir event, the director of East Brunswick also expressed interest in participating. The four choir directors all felt this was a great way to promote choral music in New Jersey as well as to give students and their parents an opportunity to hear choirs from other high schools in the state.

During the concert on April 27th, the choirs from the four high schools will each have twenty minutes to perform. In addition, pieces will be performed with different school ensembles together, and then the finale will be two selections featuring all 450 singers together.

Admission is a donation of your choosing. The donations will go to cover the cost of the chapel rental, accompanist and the recording engineer.

Please visit the following link for directions to the Princeton University Chapel: http://www.princeton.edu/religiouslife/chapel/hoursdirections/

For a second year in a row, the Voorhees High School Wrestling Team sponsored “Pinning 4 a Purpose”, which gives wrestlers the opportunity to give back to a charitable organization in the local community. This year, the wrestlers raised $6,100 for the Special Olympics of Hunterdon County by pinning their opponents throughout the season. In the two years of this fundraising program, the Voorhees Wrestling Team has donated $10,700 to the Special Olympics.

Through “Pinning 4 a Purpose”, wrestlers obtain pledges for each pin they achieve throughout the season. Pledges can come from private businesses, families, friends, fans, etc. Every time a pin or “fall” is recorded during the season, the pledge that each wrestler has solicited will be donated to the organization the team chooses to support. At the end of the season, the total pledge count, multiplied by the number of pins, will be donated in its entirety to the organization.

At the end-of-season wrestling banquet on Monday, March 19, head wrestling coach, Eric Hall, announced the team had raised a total of $6,100 for the Special Olympics. A check was presented to Special Olympics Director Joyce Kirchin and two Special Olympic athletes. The donation will go to fund the purchase of equipment for this year’s Special Olympics event.

“We are so extremely proud of our team, program and entire organization for their efforts. We are honored to be associated with the Special Olympics of Hunterdon County and we hope the donation will benefit those athletes who work just as hard and have goals that are just as important as we do,” said Hall.
