The North Hunterdon-Voorhees Regional High School District is offering a two-week summer arts camp for students currently in 6th, 7th and 8th grades for the 2014-2015 school year who are interested in the arts: music, theater/dance, fashion design, visual arts and media arts.
Dates: July 13 to 16 and July 20 to 23, 2015
Time: 8:00am to 3:00pm (AM session is 8:00-11:00 and PM session is 12:00-3:00, Lunch 11:00-12:00)
Location: Voorhees High School
Cost: $250 for one week, $500 for full two weeks

Details on the Camp –
Week 1 – Students choose classes for AM and PM sessions under Track 1.
Week 2 – Students choose classes for AM session under Track 2. PM session in Week 2 will have students working in groups to create an original thematic piece of art/theater/installation/multi-media work for exhibit.

Performing Arts: Dance/Scene, Work/Vocal Music | * Acting/Improvisation – Students will participate in theatre games designed to develop skills needed for scene work. They will explore how to build a character from the ground up by understanding time period, dramatic intent and relationships with other characters. Students will work on monologues and small scene work. * Vocal Music – Students will learn vocal technique and music theory through solo and ensemble performance opportunities. * Dance – Student will learn dance vocabulary as is used in the study of tap, ballet, & and jazz dance. Students utilize this vocabulary in the learning of basic dance combinations, culminating in producing a large dance production number. * Technical Theatre – Students will explore how to produce set pieces, props, and/or costumes for a theatre production. Students will also explore how to do technical theatre jobs such as stage monument, sound production, and lighting production. | * Acting/Improvisation – Students will focus on building confidence on stage when speaking to a group. * Vocal Music – Students will focus on building confidence while singing and presenting a piece of music. * Dance – Students will focus building confidence and body awareness through basic dance skills. |
Visual Arts 2D: Drawing, Painting, Printmaking | * Drawing - Proportion, Shading, Elements of Design - Students will work from life to begin to explore the many possibilities of drawing. * Painting - Students will learn new ways to use “classic” material; such as mixed-media paintings. * Printmaking - students will use familiar recycled materials to create innovative and interesting collagraph prints. * Explore Materials - Students will use a variety of drawing materials in the course of the camp: pencil, marker, paint, printmaking, etc. * Students will make work for the final exhibition as it relates to the theme of “re-imagination”. | * Drawing - Students will work on their observation skills to draw from life, and will “re-think” the traditional still life to create a new and innovative design. * Painting - students will explore paint materials and learn how certain materials work. * Subject Matter - students will make a piece based on their Track One area of study. |
Visual Arts 3D: Ceramics, Sculpture | * Ceramics - Students will learn the basics of clay construction and slab building techniques, they will use these techniques to re-think sculpture and functionality. Students will get an overview of the pottery wheel and have the opportunity to throw on the kick wheel. * Sculpture - Students will used recycled materials or sculpture materials in new ways to create original works of art. * Students will make work for the final exhibition as it relates to the theme of “re-imagination”. | Students will learn the basics of clay construction and hand building techniques to create a piece that relates to their track one area of study. |
Fashion Design | * Fashion Challenge – Creating a theme based fashion design using unconventional materials. * Basic Sewing - Learning how to use a sewing machine to create a basic garment (skirt, boxers, PJ bottoms, sundress or infinity scarf). * Inspirational Mood Board – Visiting Voorhees State Park, taking photos and using an inspiration from this field trip to create an outfit design and mood display board. * Upcycle Fashion Creation – Recycling and combining gently used clothes to create a current a wearable garment. * Arts Camp Exhibition - Participation in the Arts Camp Exhibition with the above creations/designs. | * Basic Sewing - Learning how to use a sewing machine to create a basic garment (skirt, boxers, PJ bottoms, sundress or infinity scarf). * Inspirational Mood Board – Visiting Voorhees State Park, taking photos and using an inspiration from this field trip to create an outfit design and mood display board. * Arts Camp Exhibition – Participation in the Arts Camp Exhibition with the above creations/designs. |
Camera Arts: Video & Photography, TV/Film Production, Photography | * Video - track one students will have one week of video instruction (week one) where they will explore: shot composition, editing, camera angle, and lighting. Students will have the opportunity to experience the VHSTV studio. Students will create a video piece related to the camp theme. * Photography - track one students will spend the second week in the photography studio studying: 35 MM black and white photography - shooting, developing film, and printing, and students will “re-think” photography, use what they learned in video, and create an original piece for the final exhibition in the photo studio. | * Photography - students will learn the basics of: shot composition, editing, camera angle, and lighting. Students will use digital photography and Adobe Photoshop to create photographs about their Track One area of study. |
The Summer Arts Camp will culminate in a show for all parents/guardians, students and friends to attend. The show will include performances, an art show, screenings, and fashion and art displays, all based around the camp’s theme of “Reimagining the Arts.” The show will be on Thursday, July 23 starting at 2:00pm.
