IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT FOR VHS PARENTS:
ATTENTION PARENTS: “ALIVE at 25”
Driving Safety Program Now Being Presented at Voorhees & North
This program’s focus goes well beyond drinking and driving, identifying numerous common risk factors that cause fatalities and injuries in teens who are new drivers.
Following West Morris’ example, both North and Voorhees are making a parent’s attendance a requirement for those whose child will applying for a parking permit for 2008-09.
This presentation is intended to encourage parents to take a more active supervisory role with the new drivers in their families. Both schools are working together to schedule presentations in such a way that the parents of all seniors who would seek parking permits will be able to attend! At present, six dates have been scheduled in May (see below), both during the day and evening hours.
Parents will be able to attend at either school, whichever is more convenient.

A
2006
Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey
survey found that
few New
Jersey parents reported being very knowledgeable about specific drugs,
including:
Steroids 37%
Ecstasy 27%
Methamphetamines 35%
Inhalants 36%
The same survey also found that while 83% of New Jersey parents feel that their opinions are very important when it comes to their child’s decision whether or not to use drugs, less than a third (30%) responded in kind when asked if their children's friends are as important in the decision to use drugs and alcohol. This fact is particularly alarming considering there is an abundance of studies linking peer influence to substance abuse.
Translation: It is very likely your child knows more about drugs and alcohol than you do and their greatest source of information is their friends.

Are you still Smoking?

There are two main ways that children of smokers are affected. The first is environmental tobacco smoke. Exposure to environmental tobacco smoke is an important -- and preventable -- cause of illness in infants and children. The second is that research shows that if parents smoke, children are more likely to smoke.
Be a good example to your kids. Quit.
