VOORHEES HIGH SCHOOL ART DEPARTMENT

                              GRADING POLICY

I. MARKING PERIOD GRADE: The marking period grade will be arrived at by

   averaging the fol1owing grades:
         
A. Project Grades
            B. Class Participation Grades
            C. Homework Grades

D. Test/Quiz Grades

    A. PROJECT GRADES:-in general, projects will be assessed on the following five criteria

1.      CRAFTSMANSHIP: the degree of skill the student uses when using different media such as  

              pencil, pastels, paint, clay, darkroom techniques, layout and video techniques, etc.

2.   ORIGINALITY: novel and unique solutions to assigned problems

 

3.   COMPOSITIONAL ABILITY: selecting and organizing lines, shapes, values, colors, textures,

              and depth in a piece of art work so that it works together as a whole.

4.   EFFORT: degree of effort applied to the project
              a. quality sketches that explore different ideas & compositional arrangements
              b. degree of research for visual sources
              c. the amount of practice a student gives to improve their skills
              d. ALL MAJOR PROJECTS MUST BE PRODUCED TO SOME EXTENT DURING

                  CLASS TIME. In classes where students are required to take their work home, they must

                  also work on it during class time.
5.   MEETING THE OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT: All work must meet the objectives as

stated by the teacher at the beginning of the project.

**DUE DATES: Grades for projects not turned in on the due date will be lowered 10% per

SCHOOL DAY at the discretion of the individual art teacher (no more than 10% per day)

    B. PARTICIPATlQN- participation grades will be given based on the following:
           1. Attendance - students who miss class will be expected to make up work
           2. Be on time for class
           3. Be prepared for class
           4. Work during the ENTIRE class period on ART work NOT OTHER SUBJECTS

           5. Clean up table area and put away all materials

    C. HOMEWORK GRADES: sketches, quality drawings, reports, and written critiques are

               examples of possible homework assignments.

 

    D. TEST GRADES
            
When tests are given, we will use the district grading scale

 

II. GRADING SCALE:

 

93%-100% = A

90%-92% = A-                                             

87%-89% = B+

83%-86% = B                                                                                                            

80%-82% = B-                                               
77%-79% = C+                                              

73%-76% = C                                                            

70%-72% = C-

67%-69% = D+                                              

64%-66% = D

below 64% = F

 

III. FINAL EXAMINATION
     
A written examination and/or a 1 1/2 hour graded project will be given at the completion of each course

       and will count 20% of the final grade for a semester course. In a full year course, the midterm exam will

       count 10% and the final exam will count 10% of the final grade.

IV. COURSE GRADE
             Semester Course
:   

                    2(MP 1 Grade) + 2(MP 2 Grade) + Final Exam Grade = Final Course Grade

 

* Student must have a minimum grade of D in two of the major grading factors.

      These factors include  two marking periods and the final examination.

 

             Full Year Course:  

          MP 1 Grade + MP 2 Grade + MP 3 Grade + MP 4 Grade + (Midterm+Final Exam)/2

                                                                                                                               = Final Course Grade

 

                    * Student must have a minimum grade of D in three of the five major grading factors.

                          These factors include four marking periods and the average of the midterm and the final

                          examination, which will yield the fifth grading factor.


V. CHEATING AND PLAGIARISM:

Cheating on tests and plagiarism of art works WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. If a student is found

guilty of cheating or plagiarism, they will receive a 0 for the project or test. Students will be

expected to produce ORIGINAL and CURRENT work for EACH art class. Students who turn in the

same project for more than one class wil1 receive a 0 on that project. Students who turn in old work

(work from a previous year or class) will receive a 0. Photography students are expected to shoot

new negatives for each assignment, to develop and print their own negatives. Having their negatives

developed and/or printed by a store or by another student is considered to be cheating.
