Morgan Harvey 2013 Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex Championships.Congratulations to the Girl’s Track & Field team as they placed 3rd at the Skyland Conference Relays on Saturday at Hunterdon Central.  It was a great team effort in which 23 girls scored points for North.  The 4X800 meter relay team qualified for Penn Relays with the 3rd fastest time in the state, Morgan Harvey ran the 4th fastest 400 hurdle time in the country, and Amy Suttmeier had a meet best 127 feet, 3 inches in the Javelin.  Great day girls!

WalterRoperCongratulations to the Boy’s Track & Field team as they placed 12th at the Skyland Conference Relays on Saturday at Hunterdon Central. Dave Mugavero ran 4:19 in the 1600m and 2:00 in the 800m.  The last athlete that we had that was able to do that was Matt McDonald. Matt is currently on the nationally-ranked Princeton Track team.  Also, Walter Roper ran his 200m leg of the 4 X 200m in a blistering 21.9 seconds!  In my 33 years with the North program, we had only one or two that was capable of running a leg in the 22’s.  We have never had a guy who can go in the 21’s… until now. These were not the only stellar performances.  Our 4 X 800m team all ran 2:08 or better.  Sam Layding ran a 1200m leg in 3:16- a terrific time, and Walter Roper added two 50.0-second 400’s to his outstanding day.

NHHS-GolfNorth Hunterdon, which won five consecutive division titles before moving over to the Delaware Division last year, has an improved team from an 8-8 campaign a year ago.  Under eighth-year coach Kirk Hissner (89-25), the Lions are led by seniors Charlie Reed and Alex Lundy, juniors Sam Custer, Kenny Horoho, and Matt Rotolo, and sophomore Kevin Johnson. “I think the kids are a lot more focused this year,” said Hissner, the 2009 and 2012 Express-Times Golf Coach of the Year. “We have a group of kids who are stepping up. They like to work hard on their game.”

Robert SpichigerWJASwimmerSwimmer of the year: When Robert Spichiger was searching for a confidence boost for a trip abroad to compete in the Swiss Junior Nationals – the North Hunterdon sophomore holds dual citizenship, for the United States and Switzerland – he needed look no further for motivation than his performance in the NJSIAA Meet of Champions earlier in March.

At the state meet, not only did Spichiger achieve an incredible personal best, he made history for his school, as well.

The 6-2, 160-pound Spichiger qualified for two A finals at the M of C, a first for a North Hunterdon male swimmer, and ultimately placed eighth in the 200-yard individual medley (1:57.08) and third in the 500 freestyle (4:38.72).

Spichiger’s 1:55.65 in the 200 IM preliminaries was a personal best by a whopping four seconds. And that’s not all. Spichiger was also the second-highest placing sophomore at the M of C behind only Moorestown’s Alex Martin, who won the IM and the 100 backstroke.

“Believe it or not, I dropped a whole four seconds in the IM and did not expect it,” Spichiger said. “I was hoping I would final (qualify for the top eight). I was seeded 21st and ended up doing amazing. I was looking at the people next to me as I was racing and I didn’t feel good during that race, so when I got 1:55 I was really surprised.

“I made no A finals last year and one B final. To be in two events and A final both was really exciting.”

Spichiger also made an impact on the local level when he earned Outstanding Swimmer honors at the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Championships on Jan. 24. He won the 500 free in 4:42.84, an exceptional time for a mid-season meet, and he finished second in the 200 IM (1:59.03).

Spichiger acknowledged there is much room for improvement, but he also believes his talent for the turns already makes him a tough competitor.

“I’m going to keep up with the person next to me,” Spichiger said. “Some people are better swimmers than me, but I really try to work on my underwaters. That’s where I can get people. I consider it my secret weapon.”

TimFlynnCoach of the year: Not a whole lot was expected out of North Hunterdon coming into the season. The Annandale school had some standouts in its lineup, but it also had many inexperienced wrestlers, some of whom had never wrestled before, filling out spots as well, especially in the upper weights.

But fifth-year coach Tim Flynn’s squad defied the conventional wisdom and put together a sensational campaign. The Lions were 18-3 in dual meets, including a streak of 13 straight triumphs at one point, and reached the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 4 semifinals. Perhaps more importantly, North won the mythical Hunterdon County regular season title by sweeping county foes Delaware Valley, Voorhees and Central for the first time in a decade.

Dual meet of the year: The final score was not as close as some of the other standout duals in the tri-county area this season, but beyond that, North Hunterdon’s 33-22 triumph over Delaware Valley on Jan. 30 in Annandale had pretty much everything one could want from a match.

In front of a capacity crowd anchored by both school’s boisterous student sections, five of 14 bouts were decided in the closing seconds of the third period and three ended in controversial calls that necessitated animated head table discussions. But North Hunterdon’s ability to win each bout from 145 pounds through 182 was enough for it to pull away from the Terriers and wrap up its first county sweep since 2003 and take a 24-23 lead in the all-time series, which dates back to the early 1960s.
